OAKLAND FALLS TO CLEVELAND STATE

CLEVELAND, Ohio. – Oakland University Softball drops to 11-2 in Horizon League play following a 4-3 loss to Cleveland State on the road Friday afternoon.

The Golden Grizzlies would start three up and down in the top of the first, doing the same to the home Vikings as Sydney Campbell went to work in the bottom of the frame as the LaGrange, Ohio native struckout two batters.

Shannon Carr and Jessie Munson would be left standing in the top of the second after their back-to-back singles before CSU would shut out the next two batters for Oakland as Campbell would bag three-straight swinging strikeouts in the bottom of the half.

In the top of the third, Reese Ruhlman reached first on an error by the second baseman in the top of the third, moving over to second off Madison Jones' single to the right side and then to third off Cammie Brummit's at bat. Jen Krizka would bring two runners across off a single down the left as a double play would retire the side.

An error by Oakland would tie the game up at 2-2 at the end of three before the Golden Grizzlies would get nothing going in the top of the fourth. Much of the same could be said for CSU in the bottom of the frame as Cammie Brummitt would get a leadoff single to kick things off in the fifth. The redshirt senior would score off advancing by a wild pitch and getting an unearned run off a fielding error by shortstop as Lauren Griffith would get on base.

Oakland would get nothing more out of the top of the fifth as the Vikings would score two runs off errors by the Golden Grizzlies' infield to take a 4-3 lead after five innings played. In the top of the sixth, OU would go three-up and three-down heading into the bottom of the stanza as the game scoring would stall the rest of the way with Oakland dropping its second Horizon League game.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS
  • Krizka and Jones lead the team with a 2-4 appearance at the plate, respectively
  • The catcher also had the only two RBI for the Golden Grizzlies
  • After starting the first two innings with five, Campbell finishes in the circle at eight strikeouts
Games two and three of the series are slated for 1:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. starts for Saturday, April 23 in Cleveland.
