INDIANAPOLIS – The 2022 Horizon League Swimming and Diving Championships kicked off Wednesday evening at the IU Natatorium (NAT) with Oakland winning the 200-yard medley relay with a time of 1:40.27 for the women and 1:26.49 for the men. Oakland concluded day one by winning the 800 freestyle relay with the women finishing in a time of 7:18.76 and the men with a time of 6:26.36. The Golden Grizzlies currently lead the standings in the men's competition with 80 points and the women's competition with 115 points.
Oakland was the first to touch the wall in Wednesday's relay competitions. The women's squad of
Susan LaGrand,
Sydney McDowell,
Sophia Davis and
Ronja Riihinen (1:40.27) and the men's team of
Marko Khotynetskyi,
Ryan Geheb,
Mack Flowers and
Christian Bart (1:26.49) got the evening started with the 200-yard medley relay. The men's race was decided by less than three-tenths of a second as Bart was able to outreach IUPUI for the first place finish.
The women's and men's 800-yard freestyle relay bookended the competitions. The 800 freestyle relay saw the women's team of
Jordyn Shipps,
Emily Aycock,
Sohvi Nenonen and LaGrand finish in 7:18.76 while the men's team of
Rudy Aguilar,
Danylo Hrebelnyi,
Ben Davis and Khotynetskyi finished in a school and Horizon League record 6:26.21 for the top podium position, a repeat championship relay team from a season ago.
Finishing in third in the women's 3-meter diving competition was sophomore
Ellie Chalifoux scoring 273.60.
Alyssa Ruhf recorded a seventh place finish with a score of 243.60.
