Powerful Performances Close Out Zippy Invitational

ROCHESTER, Mich. - Oakland Swim and Dive teams are leaving Akron with remarkable third and fourth place titles to account for their record-setting performances this weekend. The women ended the invite with a final score of 1291.5, while the men ended with a final score of 1536.

It's no secret that the Golden Grizzlies put in their best efforts in Akron as they carved out over 10 individual record-setting times, three school records, and one meet record, making this one of the most exciting and energetic meets of the season for the team.

Oakland jumped back into the water on Saturday night to finish off finals with three more first-place finishes delivered by personal best performances from Susan LaGrand in the 400-yard IM (4:15.69), Sam McKenzie in the 200-yard free (1:35.70, pool best/invite best), and lastly Marko Khotnetskyi in the 100-yard backstroke (47.12).

Notably, Jordyn Shipps swam into the second-place spot in the 100-yard butterfly with her speed in the water (53.81), and additionally, Jonas Cantrell punched his well-deserved second-place spot behind teammate McKenzie in the 200-yard free (1:37.44). Christian Bart also roped in an impressive third-place finish in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 53.41. The men's A relay team continued to chase after the win in the 200-yard freestyle relay but just barely fell into second place behind UPenn with a time of 1:20.19.

Sunday marks the final day of competition for the Golden Grizzlies in Ohio, and Oakland went out with remarkable finishes to seal the invite. Bart added another second place win in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 43.77, and similarly Taylor Bailey earned her second place spot in the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:12.99, respectively.

The men's A relay team brought home the last first place title in the long fought relay battle with UPenn this weekend in Akron with a impressively fast 400-yard freestyle time of 2:55.49, not only this, but they set the meet record to make their presence known.

Additionally, LaGrand tallied an additional third place win in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 1:55.61. And notably both Christopher Palvadre and Khotnetskyi earned fourth place honors in their respective events of the 200-yard breaststroke and 200-yard backstroke.

The Golden Grizzlies will return in the new year making a splash back into the season on January 13, 2023 as they look to host IUPUI and YSU at home.
