ROCHESTER, Mich. – Extending their win streak to a season-long three games, the Oakland Golden Grizzlies defeated the Madonna Crusaders, 94-52, on Monday, December 19 at the O'rena in the team's first home game in over five weeks.
Oakland moves to 6-4 (1-1 Horizon League), while the Crusaders, a National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) school, are now 1-13 (0-9 Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference).
The 94 points are not only the most the Golden Grizzlies have scored in a game this year, but the highest number the program has hit since a 98-70 road victory over the Chicago State Cougars on November 16, 2019.
"Give credit to Madonna, they came in and did a really good job that first quarter and we weren't making shots in the second quarter; second half, we finally started making shots," head coach
Jeff Tungate said in his postgame GrizzVision.
"We shot 71 percent in the third quarter and 55 in the fourth, so I wasn't real happy with our first half, but it's a win, it's a big win, three in a row is good, so now we're off to Toledo on Wednesday."
Oakland had six players score in double figures, with junior forward
Alexis Johnson, who was named the Nike #HLWBB Player of the Week earlier in the day for her performance in the December 17 win over the Miami (Ohio) RedHawks, leading the way with 15 points and almost tallying a double-double, finishing with nine rebounds in 25 minutes.
Freshman
Cam Grant continued her emergence as a key player for the Golden Grizzlies, posting a career-high 14 points, two assists and a pair of boards in her 20 minutes.
After playing just 29 total minutes over her first four collegiate appearances, Grant began to see increased action December 2 against the Cleveland State Vikings and has now racked up 28 points and 15 rebounds over the last four games.
"She's playing with a lot of confidence right now," Tungate said of Grant.
"Every game, you see it grow and continue to grow, her confidence, and she's finishing around the rim, doing a good job, rebounding the basketball. I think just a lot of it is the confidence level is going way up right now."
Joining Johnson and Grant with double-digit points was freshman
Brooke Daniels with 12, as well as fellow freshman
Lianna Baxter, senior
Breanne Beatty and junior Linda van Schaik, all of whom had 10.
Like was the case with Grant, Monday was also noteworthy for being the first time Baxter has scored in double figures at the collegiate level.
Freshman guard and Dearborn Divine Child graduate Ashley Hill scored a game-high 18 points for the Crusaders on 8-15 shooting, with classmates JaC'ana Anderson and Delani Robinson also finishing in double-digits with 10 and 12, respectively.
UP NEXT
Hitting the road again after a brief return home and referenced by Tungate earlier in this recap, Oakland will next be in action on Wednesday, December 21 when they travel to Savage Arena to face the Mid-American Conference's (MAC) Toledo Rockets at 7 p.m. on ESPN+ (subscription required).
