Vikings Hand Oakland a #HLMBB Opening Game Loss

CLEVELAND, Ohio. – Cleveland State handed Oakland University Men's Basketball a 80-64 loss in #HLMBB opening day of play at the Wolstein Center on Thursday night.

Rocket Watts bagged a jumper right out of the gate for Oakland (2-7, 0-1 #HLMBB) while Keaton Hervey drained a triple from the far corner as the Golden Grizzlies opened Horizon League play with a 5-2 lead with 17:06 to go in the first half.

A 9-0 run by Cleveland State (0-0, 1-0 #HLMBB) put the home Vikings out front in which they'd never look back even with Jalen Moore hitting free throws early and Hervey's off-the-glass efforts in the scoring column. Nearly five and a half minutes would go by without an Oakland basket saw CSU up by 11 as Osei Price broke the scoring drought with 8:24 remaining until the half.

Will Shepherd's jumper at the 5:46 mark would pull the Vikings back within six though CSU would look up at the scoreboard in the Wolstein Center up by 12 at the break 41-29. Oakland had shot 38.46% (10-26) from the field to Cleveland State's 44.74% (17-38) through the first 20 minutes of play.

Cleveland State started the second frame with a layup and a dunk to continue their scoring stretch out of the locker room before two Trey Townsend free throws churned up the scoreboard again for Oakland though it would run cold for five and a half minutes yet again to the 14:26 mark.

With 10:59 to go, the Vikings were running the court with a comfortable 26-point lead as Lorne Bowman II and Moore would try their hand at reeling the home black and green back in. The senior, Moore, scored seven-straight for the Golden Grizzlies spanning across five minutes of play to the 5:35 whistle.

Moore and Townsend would solidify themselves as the team's scoring leaders through the rest of the way as the latter of the two secured a double-double, eclipsing a game-high 12 rebounds. When the final buzzer went off in Cleveland, Oakland had dropped its Horizon League opener 80-64.

The Golden Grizzlies finished 40 minutes of play with a 38.2% (21-55) field goal percentage as three players, Moore, Townsend, and Hervey, had double-digit scoring marks.
