Cowboys Pull Away from Oakland in Rochester

ROCHESTER, Mich. – On Sunday afternoon, the final buzzer went off in the Athletics Center O'rena as the Oklahoma State Cowboys defeated Oakland University Men's Basketball 91-62.

Oakland would win the tip in the first power five meeting for the Golden Grizzlies in the O'rena for the first time since 2016 as Trey Townsend took a one-on-one hook shot through the net over his 7'1" defender to start the game. The visiting Cowboys would get their first chance at an and-one conversion following a Keaton Hervey foul just 1:39 into the contest, converting and forcing the game to a 4-3 mark.

Oklahoma State would gain the lead with just over three to go in the first half at 5-4 before both teams would exchange punches with Rocket Watts getting his fourth point off a jumper from the charity stripe. At the first media timeout, the Detroit native would have four while the team was out-rebounded early 3-2 in favor of the Cowboys.

The lead would be extended to five points for the orange as the second media timeout approached at the 13:18 mark, moving to six off a made free throw at 12-6 as the Golden Grizzlies' shooting froze for five minutes entering the second media timeout. Oakland had not grabbed an offensive board to this point.

Blake Lampman drained the team's first three-pointer of the game to break up the drought off Lorne Bowman's pass before Townsend once again took matters into his own hands on the ensuing possession to make the game 17-11 as the Cowboys called an early timeout.

It wouldn't take long for OSU to regain an 11-point edge nearing the eight-minute mark as Hervey would head to the line to complete the and-one bucket. The Cowboys would continue to shoot 43.5% (10-23) from the field, 2-7 (28.6%) from three-point range with the ten-point lead at the under-eight timeout.

Hervey's one-and-one conversion made the contest a six-point game once again with 4:57 to go in the first half at 28-22 while Oklahoma State would go semi-cold on their shooting this time around as the under-four media approached. A three-pointer by the Cowboys would be answered right back heading into the final break of the half as Jalen Moore would go to the line, fouled on his layup attempt with 3:10 to go.

Heading into the locker room at the break, OU found itself shooting 28.1% (9-32) from the field with Townsend once again leading the way with eight points while Hervey was the team's leader in rebounds with nine, eight of which on the defensive end. Speaking of rebounds, the Golden Grizzlies were edged by Oklahoma State 26-17 in that category with the Cowboys though catching up 6-4 in offensive rebounds.

Coming out of the half, Hervey would fly by his defender with the help of Moore to eat into the Cowboys' lead as the grad transfer would get his tenth rebound about a minute in as OK State wasted no time in calling a timeout. Hervey would secure his first-ever double-double at 18:47 with 11 points and 10 rebounds with as much to play.

Oklahoma State would continue to keep Oakland at bay with a 49-33 lead at the under-16:00 timeout on the floor, extending that to 51-33 as play would stop on the whistle. The lead would continue to grow for the visiting orange and black with a 20-point edge at 53-33 only a few minutes into the half.

Down the stretch, 153 points would be scored between both teams as the Cowboys inflated the lead by as much as 30 when the final buzzer went off at the O'rena with Hervey as the team's leading scorer with 15 points to his credit while transfer Lorne Bowman II went for a career-high 14 points in nine minutes (4-5 from the field).

Oakland would finish the day 22-60 (36.7%) from the field, a season-best 14-15 from the free throw line as one of the nation's longest three-point shooting streaks continues behind Lampman's efforts. The lead changed three times while the Golden Grizzlies edged OK State in second-chance points 6-5.

With the Cowboys' win on Sunday, this breaks a three-game winning streak Oakland had against power five opponents who would visit the O'rena as the final score flashed 91-62.
