Golden Grizzlies Head South for Crucial Final Weekend of Play

ROCHESTER, Mich. – Oakland University Volleyball heads into the final weekend of regular season play with two matches against Purdue Fort Wayne and IUPUI on November 11 and 12 in the opponent's respective arenas.

With approximately two games to play in the 2022 season, the Golden Grizzlies will travel to the Hoosier state having already swept both opponents at home back in October. Oakland currently sits seventh in the #HLVB standings trailing Youngstown State and Cleveland State for the final spot in the Horizon League Tournament.

Patti Cesarini is second in the conference in kills and kills per set with 381 on the year (3.66/set) through her 104 sets played. The La Grange Park, Illinois native is also second on the team in digs with 2.63 per set while Emily Wichmann hangs on to second in the league with a team-leading total of 530, 5.10 per set. 

AnnaBelle Tomei has aided in 470 assists to lead the squad while senior Madison Ross has 288. Tomei has averaged 4.90 assists per set while in the setter role on the floor. 

Jessica Riedl has gotten a hand in 55 blocks on the year, nine of which solo, to lead the team while Libby Gentile is just behind at 48 and Anna Nie at 40 along the front row. 

SCOUTING REPORT
PFW
Since Oakland and PFW's first meeting back on October 15, the Mastodons posted a 2-5 record with wins over IUPUI and Robert Morris as the black and gold are eliminated from #HLVB Tournament play like the Jags.

Some Horizon League leaders for Purdue Fort Wayne include Rachael Crucis in the service aces category, holding third steadily with 4.60 per set while Taya Haffner leads the Dons with 8.56 assists per set. Sidney Schiller spearheads the team with 308 kills total, 3.11 per set.

IUPUI

The Jaguars have not won a single contest since the first meeting with Oakland in the 2022 campaign on October 14. IUPUI currently holds the second-worst #HLVB record at 3-13 heading into the final weekend of play.

Briana Brown is fifth in kills in the league with 3.32 per set, a team-leading 355 total as Allie Pogue is in tow with 303 (2.86 per set), respectively. Brown also doubles as the team's leader in digs at 3.32/set. 

 


LARGEST UPSET IN THE NCAA
Oakland's 3-2 win over Green Bay in Wisconsin was characterized as the biggest upset this season in NCAA Division I volleyball with the 280th-ranked Golden Grizzlies beating the 60th-best team in the NCAA RPI.

Riedl was named the Kent State Invitational MVP following 21 kills and seven block assists as Oakland went a team-best 2-1 in the event.

OAKLAND SIXTH IN PRESEASON POLL
The Golden Grizzlies earned 51 points in the 2022 #HLVB Preseason Coaches Poll for sixth place. Northern Kentucky is predicted to be the champion with 96 points and six first-place votes.

RICE NAMED HEAD COACH
In March of 2022, Oakland welcomed Krista Rice as Head Coach of the Golden Grizzlies after a stint as Associate Head Coach at Central Michigan. Rice then filled out her staff with Kyle Stahl of Western Michigan and Rick Wootten-Smith already at Oakland.
