Oakland Ready to Battle Cleveland State for Thursday Conference Match

ROCHESTER, Mich - The Oakland Women's Soccer Team is away at Cleveland State this Thursday, October 6 to compete against the Vikings at Michael A. Carroll Stadium. 

The Golden Grizzlies are 3-2-7 for the season after their most recent tie on the road with IUPUI. There were 13 total shot attempts from a variety of Golden Grizzly players however, none of them made it through the goalposts. Defensively, the team stayed strong throughout the duration of the game and did not allow the Jaguars to get on the board resulting in a scoreless draw.

Goal leaders for Oakland this season are Alexa Sabbagh with three goals followed by Sami Lopez and Macey Wierenga with one goal and two assists each. Additionally, Jayna Fraser tags along with one goal and one assist. Notably, there are an additional five players with one goal each this season. 

The goalkeeping leader for Oakland this season is Noemi Stadelmann with 939 minutes and 30 seconds of play this year and a recorded 30 saves so far this season. She is up to a save percentage of 85.7%. Alongside her, Haley Lindow with 140 minutes and 30 seconds of play with eight saves and a save percentage of 80%.

SCOUTING REPORT

The Vikings are 5-4-3 for the season, and 2-2-1 for the conference. They most recently tied with Wright State 1-1. Cleveland State currently sits at number five in the Horizon League standings for the current season.

Goal leaders for the season are Kathryn Ramicone, Mayra Sesmas, and Maddie Young with four goals each. Following them is Erica Leinweber with three goals. Additionally, there are four other Vikings players with one goal each this season. 

Goalkeeping for the Vikings consists of Liv Fain with 29 saves and a save percentage of 74.4%, Mollie McGuire with 13 saves and a save percentage of 72.2%, and lastly, Elyse Broderick with two saves and a save percentage of 50%.

 


NATIONAL RECOGNITION
The United Soccer Coaches revealed its week one North Region Poll on August 23 with Oakland the No. 6 team in the region just behind Michigan and above Indiana, respectively.

FAVERO CONTRACT EXTENDED
Head Coach Juan Pablo Favero's contract has been extended through the 2026 season, Oakland University announced in August.

PRESEASON NO. 1
Oakland was selected as the preseason favorite in the 2022 #HLWSOC Preseason Poll with 115 votes and five first-place votes. 

NEWCOMERS TO WATCH
Seven newcomers enter the 2022 Golden Grizzlies roster on both sides of the field including transfer Allie Tefend and freshman Anuhea Aluli from Hawaii. 

LOPEZ PLAYER TO WATCH
Midfielder Sami Lopez is one of 38 women named to an exclusive list that is the NCAA Division I Players to Watch release which included four returning All-Americans from a year ago. Lopez is the only Horizon League student-athlete mentioned. 

FOUR ON 2021 #HLWSOC ALL-LEAGUE TEAM
Lopez and Zak find themselves on the All-League First Team roster with Dhlamini on the Second Team List in 2021. Rounding out the honors was Sharon Sampson on the All-Freshman Team squad. 

NATIONAL TEAM - GOLDEN GRIZZLIES
Dhlamini and Sharon Sampson are two Golden Grizzlies playing on the national stage as Dhlamini's South African National Team won the 2022 WAFCON final to qualify for the Women's World Cup in 2023. Sampson made a roster spot on the U-20 "Black Princess of Ghana" National team, playing in the 2022 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Costa Rica.
