Oakland Set to Take on Their Last #HLWSOC Away Game with Milwaukee

ROCHESTER, Mich - The Oakland Women's Soccer team is competing in their very last away game this Saturday in Milwaukee, Wisconsin against the Panthers at 2:00 pm at Engelmann Stadium. 

The Golden Grizzlies are currently running on an impressive four-game winning streak and currently hold a remarkable season record of 7-2-7 and a 4-1-3 record for the #HLWSOC conference season. 

Goal leaders for the Golden Grizzlies are Alexa Sabbagh with four goals and one assist, Sophie Wilsey with three goals and one assist, and Carmela Barro with two goals and one assist. Notably, assist leaders for the team consist of Sami Lopez with five assists and one goal, Macey Wierenga with three assists and one goal, and both Karabo Dhlamini and Jayna Fraser with two assists and one goal each. Along with these team leaders, there are an additional six Golden Grizzly players that have recorded one goal each to help Oakland throughout the season.

Goalkeepers Noemi Stadelmann and Haley Lindow have been in the net for the Golden Grizzlies this season. Stadelmann records 1299 minutes in 15 games with 36 saves and a save percentage of 85.7%. Lindow has played in three games with eight recorded saves coming to a save percentage of 80%. 

Oakland is ranked third in the Horizon League all-conference standings.

SCOUTING REPORT

The Panthers are 8-3-3 for the season and 5-1-2 for the conference season. They are rolling on a three-game win streak right now most recently coming off of a win with Northern Kentucky. 

Goal leaders for the Panthers are Kayla Rollins with eight goals, and Natalie Auble and Haley Johnson with four goals each. And leading the team with eight assists is Lainey Higgins. 

Goalkeeping for Milwaukee is Parker Donahough with 30 saves and a save percentage of 78.9%. Alongside her is Kendal Edwards with 17 saves and a save percentage of 77.3%. Additionally, goalkeeper Sydney Downs assists the team in the net. 

 


NATIONAL RECOGNITION
The United Soccer Coaches revealed its week one North Region Poll on August 23 with Oakland the No. 6 team in the region just behind Michigan and above Indiana, respectively.

FAVERO CONTRACT EXTENDED
Head Coach Juan Pablo Favero's contract has been extended through the 2026 season, Oakland University announced in August.

PRESEASON NO. 1
Oakland was selected as the preseason favorite in the 2022 #HLWSOC Preseason Poll with 115 votes and five first-place votes. 

NEWCOMERS TO WATCH
Seven newcomers enter the 2022 Golden Grizzlies roster on both sides of the field including transfer Allie Tefend and freshman Anuhea Aluli from Hawaii. 

LOPEZ PLAYER TO WATCH
Midfielder Sami Lopez is one of 38 women named to an exclusive list that is the NCAA Division I Players to Watch release which included four returning All-Americans from a year ago. Lopez is the only Horizon League student-athlete mentioned. 

FOUR ON 2021 #HLWSOC ALL-LEAGUE TEAM
Lopez and Zak find themselves on the All-League First Team roster with Dhlamini on the Second Team List in 2021. Rounding out the honors was Sharon Sampson on the All-Freshman Team squad. 

NATIONAL TEAM - GOLDEN GRIZZLIES
Dhlamini and Sharon Sampson are two Golden Grizzlies playing on the national stage as Dhlamini's South African National Team won the 2022 WAFCON final to qualify for the Women's World Cup in 2023. Sampson made a roster spot on the U-20 "Black Princess of Ghana" National team, playing in the 2022 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Costa Rica.
