Season Highs Reached in Five Set Loss to YSU

ROCHESTER, Mich. – On Tuesday evening, Oakland University Volleyball suffered a 3-2 setback to Youngstown State in #HLVB play inside the Athletics Center O'rena.

Anna Nie's kill got Oakland into the scoring column early as the Golden Grizzlies and Penguins had a duel of arms in the beginning stages of the first set. A 5-0 scoring run started by Libby Gentile followed by four-straight errors from YSU would get Oakland out to a scoreboard cushion at 11-9, only to see the lead evaporate as the Penguins retook the lead once more at 18-17.

Both teams would go back and forth, tying at 23 all before Patti Cesarini and Gentile would get back-to-back kills to take the first set 25-23 as momentum would continue into the second frame. Jessica Riedl would waste no time as the score reset for the second as Oakland would find itself with the 13-8 lead heading into the latter stages of the frame.

Things would get tense once more as the set was tied at 21-21 with a Penguins' attacking error where Oakland would spark a 5-0 scoring run off the mistake with Madison Ross, Cesarini, and, finally, a service ace from Haley Brown as OU took the two sets to none advantage.

With the first three points of the third set under Oakland's paws, Youngstown State would scrap their way to a 19-17 edge late before the teams would blink and the Golden Grizzlies spotted themselves up a point from Clarke Adams at 21-20. It would take extras in the third to determine a winner as leads were exchanged over 25 to 31 where YSU would get their first set of the match 31-29.

The 'guins would stay a step ahead in seemingly every point of the fourth set with Oakland knotting things up at 11-11 and only taking bites out of a lead at a time by a point or two with the Golden Grizzlies in tow. Cesarini would get every kill from the 11-11 mark on Oakland with a few Penguin errors sprinkled in between with the visiting red taking set four 25-19.

With a 7-2 lead in the fifth, YSU would come storming back to find themselves up on the scoreboard 12-11 before Riedl would halt the scoring rush to make things even at 12-12 before dropping the following three points, falling to Youngstown State three sets to two.
