Golden Grizzlies fall to Western Michigan in rainy affair

ROCHESTER, Mich. – Rounding out the non-league portion of their regular season slate, the Golden Grizzlies fell to the Western Michigan Broncos, 3-0, on Tuesday, October 18 at the Oakland Soccer Field.

With the defeat, the Golden Grizzlies are now 3-8-3 (3-1-2 Horizon League) and 3-3 at home in 2022.

Western Michigan improves to 10-2-1 (3-1-1 Mid-American Conference) and 6-1-1 when serving as the visiting team.

Assisted by senior Eric Conerty, classmate Daniel Nimick started the scoring for the Broncos in the 18th minute and Conerty added a tally of his own in the 38th. Charlie Sharp, another senior, extended his MAC lead with his ninth goal of the year on a penalty kick in the 67th.

Registering seven saves, graduate student goalkeeper Hunter Morse recorded his ninth shutout of the campaign.

Posting seven stops of his own, Oakland redshirt freshman keeper Michael Sly Jr. exhibited the night's most impressive display of toughness, leaving the game with 15.9 seconds remaining in the first half after a collision in the box caused a cut on his head that required stitches.

Having this handled by the athletic training staff at halftime, Sly returned and played the entire second half.

Offensively, fellow redshirt freshman Zach Townsend led the Golden Grizzlies' attack with two shots on goal, with seniors Ville Ahola, Dawsun Schrum and Micah Sonnenberg, redshirt junior Owen Smith and freshman Doug Hainer all contributing one.
