Golden Grizzlies Hope to Ice Out Youngstown State on Tuesday

ROCHESTER, Mich. – Oakland University Volleyball closes out a three-game home stand with Youngstown State in the second of two meetings in Rochester on Tuesday, October 18 at 6:00 p.m.

In the two's first meeting on the year on September 27 in Ohio, Oakland bounced back from a 25-10 set one loss to win the #HLVB contest 3-1 as Patti Cesarini tallied 17 kills ahead of Jessica Riedl's 12 and Anna Nie's season-high of five. Riedl also hauled in five blocks en route to the victory.

Cesarini averages 3.71 kills per set with 293 total through 79 sets played with Libby Gentile just behind with 168, 2.13 per set. Clarke Adams has tallied 166 and Riedl with 144 on the year, respectively. Cesarini is second in kills in the Horizon League, second in total points on the year as well.

On the defensive side, Emily Wichmann has collected 411 digs (5.20/set), once again the second-most in the Horizon League, with Cesarini grabbing the second-most on the team with 201. Riedl has now eclipsed 40 blocks on the year, seven of which solo, as Nie trails with 35 total. 

AnnaBelle Tomei leads the squad with a 4.80 assist per set average for a total of 341 on the year with fellow 1,000-plus assist leader Rachel Ross at 238.

The Golden Grizzlies currently sit fourth in the Horizon League at 5-4 on the year tied with Milwaukee, Youngstown State is currently eighth in the standings with a few weeks to go in the season.

SCOUTING REPORT

YOUNGSTOWN STATE
At 8-12 overall, 2-7 in the Horizon League, the Penguins are riding two straight losses heading into Rochester on Tuesday night after two-straight victories in Ohio against both Robert Morris and Purdue Fort Wayne. 

Paula Gursching is the conference's leader in kills on the year with 386 through 78 sets for a Horizon League best average of 4.95 per set. Two other Penguins sit with some of the league's best hitting percentages in Dayan Malave and Josi Borum with .272 and .258, respectively. Gursching has amassed the best point total in the conference with 437, an average of 5.60 per set.

 


LARGEST UPSET IN THE NCAA
Oakland's 3-2 win over Green Bay in Wisconsin was characterized as the biggest upset this season in NCAA Division I volleyball with the 280th-ranked Golden Grizzlies beating the 60th-best team in the NCAA RPI.

Riedl was named the Kent State Invitational MVP following 21 kills and seven block assists as Oakland went a team-best 2-1 in the event.

OAKLAND SIXTH IN PRESEASON POLL
The Golden Grizzlies earned 51 points in the 2022 #HLVB Preseason Coaches Poll for sixth place. Northern Kentucky is predicted to be the champion with 96 points and six first-place votes.

RICE NAMED HEAD COACH
In March of 2022, Oakland welcomed Krista Rice as Head Coach of the Golden Grizzlies after a stint as Associate Head Coach at Central Michigan. Rice then filled out her staff with Kyle Stahl of Western Michigan and Rick Wootten-Smith already at Oakland.
