On The Road To Take On The Raiders in #HLWSOC Match-up

ROCHESTER, Mich - The Oakland Women's Soccer team will go head to head with Wright State tomorrow October, 16 at 1:00 pm in Dayton, Ohio on the Alumni Field at Rinzler Student Sports Complex.

The Golden Grizzlies are coming off their third consecutive win on the season which is a huge milestone for the team as it has only been done once before in the history of the NCAA Division I soccer program at Oakland. Currently, Oakland holds a 6-2-7 record for the season as a whole and 3-1-3 for the conference season. The team continues to push for more success as they are rounding out the end of the season with these last three games with Wright State tomorrow, and then Milwaukee and Detroit Mercy to end the season in the next couple of weeks. 

Goal leaders for the Golden Grizzlies are Alexa Sabbagh with three goals and one assist, Carmela Barro with two goals and one assist, and Sophie Wilsey with two goals. Notably, Sami Lopez records an impressive five assists on the season along with one goal, and Macey Wierenga follows close behind with three assists and one goal. Additionally, there are seven other Golden Grizzly players with one goal each.

Goalkeeper Noëmi Stadelmann reaches 35 saves adding to her save percentage of 87.5%. Alongside Stadelmann, is goalkeeper Haley Lindow with eight saves and a solid 80% save percentage for the season. 

SCOUTING REPORT

The Raiders are sitting at 7-5-3 record for the season and 4-1-3 for the conference season most recently coming off their recent 2-1 win against Robert Morris. 

Goal leaders for the Raiders are Marcella Sizer with six goals and three assists, Lauren Borchert with four goals and one assist, Elise Canter with three goals, Olga Massombo with two goals and three assists, and Kaylin Helinski with two goals and one assist.

Goalkeeping for the Raiders consists of Jessika Seward with 58 saves and a save percentage of 69.9%, and Kiera Sarka with six saves and a save percentage of 75%.

 


NATIONAL RECOGNITION
The United Soccer Coaches revealed its week one North Region Poll on August 23 with Oakland the No. 6 team in the region just behind Michigan and above Indiana, respectively.

FAVERO CONTRACT EXTENDED
Head Coach Juan Pablo Favero's contract has been extended through the 2026 season, Oakland University announced in August.

PRESEASON NO. 1
Oakland was selected as the preseason favorite in the 2022 #HLWSOC Preseason Poll with 115 votes and five first-place votes. 

NEWCOMERS TO WATCH
Seven newcomers enter the 2022 Golden Grizzlies roster on both sides of the field including transfer Allie Tefend and freshman Anuhea Aluli from Hawaii. 

LOPEZ PLAYER TO WATCH
Midfielder Sami Lopez is one of 38 women named to an exclusive list that is the NCAA Division I Players to Watch release which included four returning All-Americans from a year ago. Lopez is the only Horizon League student-athlete mentioned. 

FOUR ON 2021 #HLWSOC ALL-LEAGUE TEAM
Lopez and Zak find themselves on the All-League First Team roster with Dhlamini on the Second Team List in 2021. Rounding out the honors was Sharon Sampson on the All-Freshman Team squad. 

NATIONAL TEAM - GOLDEN GRIZZLIES
Dhlamini and Sharon Sampson are two Golden Grizzlies playing on the national stage as Dhlamini's South African National Team won the 2022 WAFCON final to qualify for the Women's World Cup in 2023. Sampson made a roster spot on the U-20 "Black Princess of Ghana" National team, playing in the 2022 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Costa Rica.
