Oakland Hosting Norse in #HLWSOC Matchup at Home

ROCHESTER, Mich - The Oakland Women's Soccer Team will be staying home for another #HLWSOC conference match-up with Northern Kentucky on October 13th at 7:00 pm. 

The Golden Grizzlies are currently 5-2-7 on the season with a 2-1-3 conference record for so far, most recently coming off an exciting two-game win streak from this past week's games with Cleveland State and Robert Morris. Sophie Wilsey came in with Oakland's only goal during their face-off with the Vikings last Thursday, and then added yet another goal to finish up Sunday's match-up with the Colonials. Offensive energy swept through Sunday's game with strong first-half momentum with a goal from Carmela Barro and assists from both Sharon Sampson and Sami Lopez and closely following this came Karabo Dhlamini firing in with a second goal for the Golden Grizzlies with another assist by Lopez. 

Goal leaders for the Golden Grizzlies are Alexa Sabbagh three goals and one assist, and following her is Sophie Wilsey with two goals. Additionally, Sami Lopez leads the team in assists with four total this season right alongside Macey Wierenga with three assists, and both individuals hold one goal each. 

Goalkeeping for the Golden Grizzlies this season is Noemi Stadelmann with 1,119 minutes and 30 seconds of playing time so far totaling 33 saves with a save percentage of 86.8%. Alongside her is Haley Lindow with 140 minutes and 30 seconds of play, eight saves, and a save percentage of 80%. 

Notably, the Golden Grizzlies are 13th in the nation for NCAA Division 1 Women's Soccer for holding a goals-against-average percentage of .500 for the season. Not only this but Oakland is ranked nationally for their shutout percentage of .571 per game with eight shut-outs so far for the 2022 season.

SCOUTING REPORT

The Norse are currently 1-8-2 for the season with a 1-4-1 conference record. They are coming of a recent loss against Youngstown State. 

Goal leaders for the Norse are Emily Doersching with two goals, and following her is both Shannon Crogan and Maria Wiefering with one goal each. Additionally, Taylor Abbot holds one assist on the season. 

Goalkeeping for the Norse consists of Mickayla Kowalski with 561 minutes and 42 seconds of playing time, 22 saves, and a 78.6% save percentage. Additionally, there is Mimi Stines with 338 minutes and 18 seconds of play, 16 saves, and a save percentage of 69.6%.

 


NATIONAL RECOGNITION
The United Soccer Coaches revealed its week one North Region Poll on August 23 with Oakland the No. 6 team in the region just behind Michigan and above Indiana, respectively.

FAVERO CONTRACT EXTENDED
Head Coach Juan Pablo Favero's contract has been extended through the 2026 season, Oakland University announced in August.

PRESEASON NO. 1
Oakland was selected as the preseason favorite in the 2022 #HLWSOC Preseason Poll with 115 votes and five first-place votes. 

NEWCOMERS TO WATCH
Seven newcomers enter the 2022 Golden Grizzlies roster on both sides of the field including transfer Allie Tefend and freshman Anuhea Aluli from Hawaii. 

LOPEZ PLAYER TO WATCH
Midfielder Sami Lopez is one of 38 women named to an exclusive list that is the NCAA Division I Players to Watch release which included four returning All-Americans from a year ago. Lopez is the only Horizon League student-athlete mentioned. 

FOUR ON 2021 #HLWSOC ALL-LEAGUE TEAM
Lopez and Zak find themselves on the All-League First Team roster with Dhlamini on the Second Team List in 2021. Rounding out the honors was Sharon Sampson on the All-Freshman Team squad. 

NATIONAL TEAM - GOLDEN GRIZZLIES
Dhlamini and Sharon Sampson are two Golden Grizzlies playing on the national stage as Dhlamini's South African National Team won the 2022 WAFCON final to qualify for the Women's World Cup in 2023. Sampson made a roster spot on the U-20 "Black Princess of Ghana" National team, playing in the 2022 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Costa Rica.
