ROCHESTER, Mich. -- The Oakland men's and women's swimming and diving teams defeated Wayne State Sunday afternoon from the Oakland Aquatic Center on senior day. The men topped the Warriors 194.5-86.5, while the women cruised to a 197-82 win over WSU.
Oakland cruised to a combined 26 first place finishes between the men and women in both swimming and diving competition.
The Golden Grizzlies opened the day in convincing fashion in the 200 medley relay. The women's team made up of
Susan LaGrand,
Sydney McDowell,
Mia Keranen and
Jordyn Shipps placed first in a time of 1:43.97. The men's team of
Marko Khotynetskyi,
Christian Bart,
Mack Flowers and
Rudy Aguilar touched the wall first in 1:29.58.
In the 1000 free, freshman
Bora Kutlu dominated in the men's competition finishing nearly 13 seconds ahead of the second-place finisher.
LaGrand (1:53.55) and Aguilar (1:39.91) continued their stellar senior day performances, taking first place in the 200 free.
The Golden Grizzlies had a day in sprints, sweeping the 50 back and 50 breaststroke on both the men's and women's side.
Jewel Huang (26.81), and Khotynetskyi (23.23) led the way in the backstroke, while
Taylor Bailey (29.08) and Bart (25.24) led the way in the breaststroke. Shipps also took the top spot in the 50 free, finishing in 23.76.
Oakland placed in the top three in the 200 IM in both the men's and women's races.
Sohvi Nenonen (2:10.48),
Julia Cook (2:11.69), and
Kiera Brough (2:12.55) led the way for the women, while
Andrew Bernsdorf (1:54.09),
Jack Wike (1:54.16) and
Ian Allen (1:57.28) paced the men.
Nicholas Schmid took home two first place finishes in diving, scoring 260.18 in the one meter and 295.73 in the three meter. On the women's side,
Ellie Chalifoux placed first in the one meter dive with a mark of 260.93.
Oakland will take on it's last Horizon League for before the conference championships, as the Golden Grizzlies will travel to Cleveland State Friday, Jan. 28 at 4 p.m.
Oakland honored its 16 seniors prior to Sunday's meet.
