VOLLEYBALL FALLS TO BOWLING GREEN IN NON-CONFERENCE FINALE

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio
— The Oakland University volleyball program concluded non-conference play with a three-set loss at Bowling Green (9-25, 17-25, 16-25) on Sunday afternoon at the Stroh Center. 

The Golden Grizzlies (6-5) endured season lows in hitting percentage (.012), assists (20), and kills (21) in the match. Meanwhile, the Falcons (4-6) hit .418 with 46 kills and just eight errors. 

Individually, fifth-year player Jamie Walling totaled a team-high five kills to go along with three digs and two blocks. The senior duo of Kerra Cornist and Jessica Riedl combined for eight kills and five blocks. Junior setter AnnaBelle Tomei had a team-leading 10 assists and six digs, while redshirt freshman Kennedy Dolmage tied for the match lead in service aces with two and added six digs and two assists.

Oakland trailed for the entirety of the opening set. The Golden Grizzlies were down early, 7-2, and their deficit increased to 18-6 following a 10-1 run by the Falcons. The Golden Grizzlies could not muster a comeback for the remainder of the period, resulting in a 25-9 set loss for OU. BGSU thrived in the attack against Oakland with a .500 hitting percentage and just one error.

BGSU opened a 4-1 advantage in the following set and continued the carry the momentum as its lead grew to 12-5 after four consecutive points. With OU down 18-9 later in the set, the Golden Grizzlies got within four, 19-15, after a 6-1 run. However, the finishing result was a 25-17 set victory for BGSU. Dolmage was a bright spot in the period with two aces. Freshman Clarke Adams made an impact with two kills on just two tries. 

The Golden Grizzlies kept the third set close, as they trailed by one, 8-7, after a block by Riedl and Adams. Despite OU's improved play, BGSU never let go of its lead and managed to clinch the match with a 25-16 set win. 

Oakland will return to action for its Horizon League opener on Friday, Sept. 24, at Youngstown State.
