YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – Alexa Sabbagh recorded her first goal of the season in the 88th
minute to force double overtime as the Oakland women's soccer team opened Horizon League play with a 1-1 draw to Youngstown State Thursday from Farmers National Bank Field.
Sabbagh paced Oakland offensively, recording a game-high six shots, three on goal.
Sami Lopez,
Ashley Postma and
Macey Wierenga all added three shots of their own.
Youngstown State (0-6-2) netted the first goal of the game, coming off a miscue from the Golden Grizzlies at the 22nd
minute.
Oakland created a number of scoring opportunities but was unable to find the back of the net in the first half, ending the first 45 minutes of play trailing the Penguins, 1-0.
The Golden Grizzlies were dominate in the second half, tallying 10 shots compared to YSU's four.
Oakland (1-7-1) nearly tied things up with 20 minutes remaining in regulation, as
Sophie Wilsey had a beautiful no-look pass back to
Carmela Barro who was stopped by an outstanding save by the YSU keeper.
The Golden Grizzlies continued to battle and it wasn't until the 88th
minute they were rewarded after a perfectly placed ball from
Kendra Zak found Sabbagh to tie things up at one-all.
Oakland continued to apply pressure in both overtimes, tallying three shots in each period, and holding the Penguins to zero shots in either overtime session.
Neither team was able to capitalize during the extra 20 minutes, ending the game in a 1-1 draw.
The Golden Grizzlies recorded 23 shots on the night, a season-high by more than double as Oakland tallied 11 shots (twice) early this season against Kent State and Stetson.
