The performance earned Townsend #HLMBB Freshman of the Week honors for the second time this season.
Three players from Oakland's frontcourt scored in double-figures to propel the Golden Grizzlies to a 81-66 victory over PFW in the series opener.
Townsend recorded his second career double-double in the series opener with 11 points and 12 rebounds.
PRO CONNECTIONS
The Brooklyn Nets added '14 alum Travis Bader to their player development staff in late December 2020. In the role, he will work with NBA and G League players on specific skills using video analysis as well as hands-on teaching. Bader enjoyed a four-year career with the Golden Grizzlies, where he twice earned all-conference honors and broke the NCAA Division I record for career 3-pointers with 504. The native of Okemos, Mich., went on to compete professionally in the G League and overseas from 2014-2020.
Former Oakland guard Ryan Hoover (2003 alum) has been the Vice President of Global Scouting for the Milwaukee Bucks since July 2017. Previously, Hoover spent 13 seasons with the nearby Detroit Pistons, including seven (2006-12) as Director of Player Development and two (2012-14) as a Pro Personnel Scout.
Max Hooper, a former Horizon League Sixth Man of the Year for the Golden Grizzlies, is in his second year as the video coordinator for the Los Angeles Lakers. Last season, he helped the Lakers claim their 17th NBA Championship. Hooper is well-known for being the only player in NCAA history to shoot over 200 3-point attempts without a 2-point attempt in a season.
Former assistant coach Brandon Weems (2013-15) has been the Director of Scouting for the Cleveland Cavaliers since August 2017. In his time at Oakland, he helped develop point guard Kay Felder, who would go on to be selected in the second round of the 2016 NBA Draft. Weems got his start in the NBA as a college scout for the Cavaliers in 2015. Before Cleveland, the Northeast Ohio native had collegiate stints at Kentucky (2019-12) and Drexel (2012-13).
Current Denver Nuggets head coach Mike Malone spent the 1994-95 season as an assistant under Greg Kampe for the Golden Grizzlies. He earned his first head coaching job with the Sacramento Kings following a 12-year stint as an assistant in the NBA. Malone joined the Nuggets in 2015, where he has led his team to consecutive playoff appearances.
