
MILWAUKEE - With the game tied in overtime at 82-82,
Breanna Perry took an inbound pass, was fouled under the basket, and split a pair of free ensuing throws with two seconds left to give Oakland a wild 83-82 win at Milwaukee on Friday night. The Panthers had a chance to respond on the ensuing possession but committed their 30th turnover of the game. Freshman
Lamariyee Williams hit her first collegiate 3-pointer as time expired on the shot clock which gave Oakland a 82-78 lead with 15 seconds left. However, Milwaukee got a quick two points, forced a turnover, and tied the game at 82-82 from the free throw line off an Oakland foul off the ball.
Kahlaijah Dean scored a team-high 19 points with seven assists while
Chloe Guingrich added 14 points on 7-of-10 shooing from the field off the bench after missing the last two games.
Autumn Kissman also reached double figures with 11 points on 5-of-9 shooting.
Perry just missed a double-double with nine points and nine rebounds while Williams finished with seven points.
Jalisha Terry and
Alona Blackwell each finished with eight points with four and three steals respectively.
Oakland's defense was key forcing a season-high 30 Milwaukee turnovers which led into 26 points on the offensive end of the floor which proved to be the difference.
After falling behind 5-4, Oakland went on a 5-0 run with 5:03 left in the first quarter, culminating in a three from Perry, to take a 9-5 lead. Milwaukee then responded to tie things up at 12-12 heading into the second quarter. Oakland relied on its three-point shooting in the period, knocking down two shots to account for six of its 12 points.
The two teams then played an even second quarter entering halftime with the score knotted up at 27-27. Oakland dominated in the paint, scoring eight of its 15 points close to the basket.
After intermission,
Brianna Breedy scored Oakland's first three points of the half but Milwaukee took a 50-38 lead aided by a 10-0 run before Oakland answered back by going on a 5-0 run, punctuated by a basket from Dean, to trim its deficit to 50-43 with 2:53 to go in the third. The Golden Grizzlies continued to reduce the Milwaukee lead, shrinking it to 54-49 by the end of the frame. Oakland's bench made the most of its minutes in the period, as non-starters totaled eight of the team's 22 third-quarter points.
Oakland's run extended to 12-4 to pull within three points at 54-51 to open the fourth quarter and continued to narrow the deficit to 65-61 before going on a 6-0 run to seize a 67-65 lead with 1:38 to go in the fourth. The Panthers then fought back to even things up at 69-69. Terry's 3-pointer as time expired was off the mark sending the game to overtime. Oakland took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring 14 of its 20 points in the paint.
The Golden Grizzlies went on a 5-0 run to seize a 78-73 lead with 1:41 to go in overtime before the Panthers clawed back to eventually tie the game at 82-82 setting the stage for the wild finish.
