Trey Townsend claimed Nike® #HLMBB Freshman of the Week honors for the second time this season, as the Horizon League announced its men's basketball weekly awards Monday afternoon.
Townsend averaged a double-double with 15.0 points and 10.5 rebounds while shooting 60 percent (12-of-20) from the floor to lead the Oakland men's basketball team to a series sweep at Purdue Fort Wayne. Townsend notched 11 points and a career-best 12 rebounds for his second career double-double in the series-opening 81-66 win over the Mastodons. He added a career-high 19 points on 8-of-12 shooting along with nine rebounds and two blocks in OU's 82-75 victory in the Saturday rematch. The native of Oxford, Mich. led the Golden Grizzlies in rebounding (10.5 per game), steals (1.5 per game), and blocks (1.0 per game) on the weekend. To add, he shot an efficient 60 percent (3-of-5) from outside the arc and assembled a team-best +30 plus-minus in the series.
On the season, Townsend leads Oakland in blocks per game (1.0) while ranking second on the team in rebounds per game (5.7), field goal percentage (55.3%), and 3-point percentage (35.3%).
