GOLDEN GRIZZLIES CONQUER COLONIALS, 65-60

Oakland evened out their conference and overall records on the strength of Kahlaijah Dean's 22 points

Box Score Info 11.20
ROCHESTER, Mich. –
Oakland earned their first Horizon League win this season after defeating Robert Morris 65-60 on Saturday, Nov. 20.

Kahlaijah Dean scored a game-high 22 points with four 3-pointers. The biggest three came with 4:18 remaining to take a one-point lead, after trailing the entire second half. After a timeout, Dean hit a big three to put the score at 59-58. Lamariyee Williams hit 4-4 free throws down the stretch to keep the lead.

Dean stole the ball from Robert Morris with 43 seconds left up by three. Brianna Breedy hit two more free throws to give Oakland the 65-60 lead, which they held onto for the five-point win. Breedy went 6-6 from the line and 3-4 from the floor, making the most of her chances and providing steady play for Oakland in her 33 minutes.

Oakland shot 4-5 from deep in the fourth to spur their comeback, 80%. Dean shot 40% from three on 10 attempts, Breanne Beatty hit 2-2 threes and Lamariyee Williams hit her only three ball.

Breanna Perry and Olivia Sims started for the first time this year. Sims played 11 minutes and was scoreless, grabbing a rebound. Perry played 25 minutes, scoring six points, grabbing six rebounds and recorded two blocks and steals each.

Oakland made their presence felt on the fast break, outscoring Robert Morris 15-0 in transition. The two teams had very different styles of play, as Robert Morris focused on attacking the paint in the half-court. Robert Morris outscored Oakland 44-16 in the paint on the strength of Ashya Klopfenstein and Sol Castro. Klopfenstein was the leading rebounder, grabbing a game-high eight missed shots.

The Golden Grizzlies sprinted out to an early eight-point lead in the first quarter, 18-10. The Colonials had an answer, going on a 7-0 run to end the quarter. After one, Oakland led by just one, 18-17. A tightly contested second quarter followed, and Robert Morris took a narrow one-point lead at halftime, 33-32.

A slow third quarter for both teams made the fourth quarter a crucial 10 minutes. Robert Morris outscored Oakland 12-9 in the third, extending their lead to 45-41 going into the final period. To kick off the fourth, the Colonials would extend their lead to seven, putting Oakland at risk of falling to 0-2 in conference play.

The Golden Grizzlies had an answer. That answer was two letters: KD. Dean scored eight of Oakland's 16 points during their 16-9 run to reclaim the lead, including the three to take the lead. Dean had two crucial steals in the fourth as well to reclaim the game. As a team, Oakland forced four turnovers during the run, swarming to the ball, trapping and making life uncomfortable for Colonial ball-handlers.

Oakland heads on the road for the first time this season in their next game, a 7 p.m. tip-off versus the No. 14 Michigan Wolverines at the Crisler Center, Monday, Nov. 22.
