MILWAUKEE, Wis. — The No. 6 seed Oakland University volleyball program dropped a three-set decision to No. 3 seed Wright State (15-25, 11-25, 19-25) on Friday evening in the Horizon League Championship quarterfinals.
The Golden Grizzlies finished the season 15-15 overall and 9-9 in HL play. Meanwhile, the Raiders (23-7, 14-3 HL) advanced to the tournament semifinals, where they will take on No. 1 seed Milwaukee.
A pair of seniors in
Brittany Welch and
Jessica Riedl paced the OU attack with eight kills apiece. Graduate senior
Jamie Walling and redshirt freshman
Patti Cesarini were close behind with six kills.
Junior setters
AnnaBelle Tomei and
Madison Ross combined for 21 digs in their return to the court. Tomei added Oakland's lone service ace of the match, while Ross notched a team-leading four blocks. Fifth-year senior
Lindsay Wightman had a team-high nine digs to go along with three assists.
Oakland lost the first two sets by double-digits, as WSU won the opening period 25-15, followed by a 25-11 set victory.
OU trailed 11-5 in set three but responded with a 3-0 run to reduce its deficit to 11-8. The Raiders responded with a 4-1 run to increase their lead to 15-9. The Golden Grizzlies could not overcome the edge for the remainder of the period, resulting in a match-ending 25-19 set loss.
