MOON TOWNSHIP, Pa. — The Oakland women's volleyball team made quick work of Robert Morris, defeating the Colonials in straight-sets (25-23, 25-16, 25-23), Tuesday evening inside the UPMC Events Center. The victory clinched a season-opening sweep for the Golden Grizzlies (2-0, 2-0 HL) as they defeated Robert Morris (0-2, 0-2 HL) in a five-set thriller last night.
Freshman outside hitter
Patti Cesarini paced the Golden Grizzly offense with a match-high 16 kills at a .429 clip. The duo of
Brittany Welch and
Jessica Riedl each contributed with seven-plus kills. Reidl's hitting percentage of .636 on seven kills was a match-best. Senior middle hitter
Jamie Walling had an all-around match, as she notched seven kills, eight digs, and four block assists.
Haley Brown tallied a team-high 11 digs, while
AnnaBelle Tomei finished just shy of a double-double with 12 assists and nine digs.
Madison Ross piloted OU setters with 22 assists.
As a team, Oakland hit .331 while holding the Colonials to a .194 clip. RMU recorded a 12-1 home record last season, but OU managed to surpass their 2019 loss total in just two days with its series sweep.
Oakland jumped out to a 6-0 advantage in the first set and never looked back, as the Golden Grizzlies won 25-23. OU once again got in front in the second frame and coasted to a 25-16 set win. Oakland hit .467 in the second set and took advantage of 10 Colonial errors.
The third set was much closer than either of the two previous sets, with RMU taking its first lead of the match in the frame. The Colonials clung to a 10-8 lead, but Oakland answered back to hold a 24-22 advantage. A kill by Cesarini ended the match and gave OU its first sweep of the season.
The Golden Grizzlies will have a bye next week before hosting Wright State for their home opener on Feb. 8-9 (Monday-Tuesday) at the Athletics Center O'rena.
