Kahlaijah Dean who reached double figures for the ninth consecutive game with 11 points as Oakland won its second straight Horizon League game with a 63-46 decision over UIC on Thursday night at the O'rena on Girls & Women and Sport Day. Making her second consecutive start,
Alona Blackwell also scored in double figures for the second straight game with 11 points.
Oakland's (10-12, 5-6 HL) defense put the clamps down as UIC's (3-20, 2-10 HL) 46 points was the second lowest total surrendered by the Golden Grizzlies this season while also forcing a season second-best 25 turnovers which lead to 15 points. The Flames also only shot 1-for-7 (14.3%) from behind the arc.
Offensively, Oakland grabbed a season second-best 17 offensive rebounds which accounted for a 19-0 second chance points advantage. The Golden Grizzlies also dished out 18 assists on 22 made baskets.
During the fourth quarter, Oakland got four offensive rebounds in one trip down floor capped off by a jumper from
Autumn Kissman increasing the lead to 59-38 as they rolled down the stretch en route to the win.
In the third quarter, Oakland's hot shooting continued as the Golden Grizzlies shot 3-of-5 from 3-point range and 41.2 percent from the field to move ahead 49-34 heading into the fourth.
The Golden Grizzlies took control of the game going on a 10-0 run towards the end of the second quarter to take a 14 point lead at 29-15 and ended the half leading 31-19.
Oakland opened the game with suffocating defense holding the Flames to just nine points while scoring 16.
The Golden Grizzlies conclude their three-game home stand against Horizon League leader IUPUI on Saturday, Feb. 8 at 3 p.m.
