Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

OAKLAND MEN’S BASKETBALL STUMBLES LATE, 71-68, AT IUPUI

The Golden Grizzlies had three looks at an equalizer in Indianapolis but couldn’t get one to fall as Oakland falls at IUPUI, 71-68.

INDIANAPOLIS, Indiana - Oakland University men's basketball dropped its seventh one-possession game, 71-68, to IUPUI at the Indiana Farmers Coliseum on Thursday, February 27. The Golden Grizzlies had three looks at an equalizer in the final seconds but couldn't knock one down.

Senior forward Xavier Hill-Mais had a team-high 17 points to lead four Golden Grizzlies in double figures as the Greensboro, North Carolina native extended his double-double streak to four-consecutive games, hauling down 12 rebounds.

Senior center Brad Brechting finished with 16 points. Sophomore Tray Maddox Jr. went for 10-plus for a fourth-straight game, contributing 13. Sophomore guard Rashad Williams had 11 points - nine coming from range.

Oakland finished 2-of-8 from the foul line and just 6-of-27 from beyond the arc.

Marcus Burk had a game-high 21 points for the Jaguars. Jaylen Minnett buried five triples as part of his 19 points. Elyjah Goss had a team-high 10 rebounds.

Oakland hit a milestone in the effort, knocking down at least one triple for the 1,000th-consecutive game. The last time Oakland did not convert a shot from behind the arc was on Jan. 30, 1988 vs. Wayne State University.

IUPUI's Mike DePersia stepped up to the free throw  line with 25.2 to go for a one-and-one opportunity. The 50-percent free throw shooter hit both, pushing the Golden Grizzlies' deficit to three.

A Burk three-pointer with just over three to play gave the Jaguars the lead back, 65-64. The sides exchanged the lead before Grant Weatherford hit a jumper in the paint to give IUPUI a one-point edge heading into the final minute.

Powered by a 9-0 run, Oakland matched its largest lead of the game with 9:03 to play, 55-48.

Maddox Jr. gave the Golden Grizzlies their first lead, 49-48, since the 6:09-mark to play in the opening half. Hill-Mais and Oladapo extended the edge with a pair of ensuing buckets.

With under a minute until the half, facing an eight point deficit, the Golden Grizzlies executed the two-for-one. Maddox Jr. knocked down his first bucket of the contest that led into a stop on the other end. Five seconds left on the clock, Hill-Mais found junior guard Kevin Kangu in the corner for a triple, sending Oakland into the break down 38-35.

IUPUI engineered a 10-0 run to take a 36-28 edge with 3:22 to play in the half. A Brechting slam stopped the spurt. The Cedar Springs native had 11 first half points.

Oakland opened the game on a 9-2 run before the Jaguar offense awoke. IUPUI took its first lead of the game, 23-21, with a triple from Minnett.

The Jaguars completed the season sweep over Oakland for the first time since 2006 and for the first time as members of the Horizon League.

Oakland wraps up the regular season on Saturday, February 29, at UIC. Tip off is set for 4:12 ET.
