OAKLAND SOFTBALL DOWNS CLEMSON, WALKS-OFF OVER VILLANOVA

On day two of the Citrus Classic, the Golden Grizzlies opened the day with a 4-2 victory over Clemson before storming back from nine down to walk-off against Nova.

ROCHESTER, Michigan - Oakland University softball opened the second day of play at the Citrus Classic at the ESPN Wide World of Sports with a 4-2 win over Clemson. After falling behind 9-0 to Villanova, the Golden Grizzlies roared back to walk-off against the Wildcats, 14-12.

Redshirt sophomore Madison Jones exploded for two home runs - highlighted by a two-run walk-off in game two. Jones went 5-of-9 on the day with 7 RBI. Her two homers were the first by any Oakland player this season. The Golden Grizzlies have combined for 15 extra base hits in eight games.

Junior Shannon Carr brought four runners around while scoring three runs of her own. Two of Carr's three hits came against Villanova.

Redshirt Sophomore Cammie Brummitt was 4-of-8 at the plate. Brummitt recorded two RBI and scored once. Nine different Golden Grizzlies had a hit on the day.

For the first time this season, four different pitchers saw action for Oakland in a single day. Freshman Sydney Campbell notched her third win of the season, throwing a complete game against the Tigers. Campbell struck out eight and limited Clemson to one earned run.

In game two versus the Wildcats (8-6), junior Chelsea Wiggins got the start for the first time this season. Villanova found early success against Wiggins, as junior Lauryn DeBono came in after four batters. DeBono lasted five batters before freshman Marisa Muglia earned the win in her first appearance in the circle of the year. Muglia struck out three and surrendered five earned on seven hits.

Eighteen runs were scored between the sides in the first inning of game two. The Wildcats hit four home runs and three doubles in the top of the frame to jump out to a 9-0 lead.

The Golden Grizzlies responded though with a three-run homer off the bat of Jones. Oakland would put two more runners on base before recording an out in the first. Three walked batters set the scene for senior Rachel Zerona and Jones to bring around three more tallies.

Oakland took its first lead, 10-9, in the second. Sophomore Sidney Rayba doubled to left field and was brought home by a junior Jessie Munson single.

Villanova saw two more Golden Grizzly runs before evening the score in the sixth inning. The Wildcats' fifth homer of the game sent the ballgame into the seventh 12-12.

Zerona looked at ball four to put the game-winning run on base for Jones in the bottom of the seventh. Jones recorded her fourth extra base hit of the season to end the outing in walk-off fashion.

Oakland opened the day with a 4-2 win over Clemson (8-7). The Golden Grizzlies' stretch of scoring first came to an end after four games. The Tigers jumped ahead in the fourth. With two on and two out, a single up the middle scored one.

The Black and Gold stormed back with a four-run fifth frame. Sophomore Kayla Gibson led off with a single down the left field line. Following a hit by pitch, Munson singled to third to load the bases for Carr. The junior shortstop scored two with a hit up the middle. Brummitt brought around two more with a single to right field - Brummitt has notched a hit in six-straight games.

An error in the bottom of the seventh gave Clemson a chance to load the bases with one out. Campbell and Oakland's defense limited the damage to just one.

The Golden Grizzlies conclude play at the Citrus Classic on Sunday, February 23, against Stetson. First pitch is set for 10 a.m.
