OAKLAND MEN’S BASKETBALL STUMBLES AGAINST WRIGHT STATE, 96-69

Oakland dropped its first league game of the campaign, falling to the Raiders, 96-69, at the O’rena on Friday night.

ROCHESTER, Mich. -- The Oakland University men's basketball team fell to league foe Wright State, 96-69, on Friday, January 3, at the O'rena. Sophomore Tray Maddox Jr. and senior Xavier Hill-Mais led the Golden Grizzlies with 14 points apiece.

For the first time since the season opener on November 5 against Goshen, Oakland (6-9, 1-1 HL) had five players in double-figures. It was just the second time this season the Golden Grizzlies have accomplished the feat and the third-straight game with at least three players in double-digits.

Joining Maddox Jr. and Hill-Mais in double-digits was senior Brad Brechting, 13 points, sophomore Daniel Oladapo, 10 points, and freshman Madison Monroe, 10 points.

Sophomore Babatunde Sowunmi and Hill-Mais paced Oakland with six rebounds each. Junior Kevin Kangu and Maddox Jr. led the way in the assist column, handing out four helpers apiece.

The Golden Grizzlies assisted on 21 of 26 field goals - the second most on the campaign behind last week's effort versus Detroit Mercy - 22 assists. Oakland has three 20-plus assist efforts this season.

Bill Wampler notched a game-high 21 points for the Raiders (13-3, 3-0 HL). Wright State had four scorers reach double figures. Jordan Ash pulled down nine boards to lead the game.

The Raiders outrebounded the Golden Grizzlies, 40-28 - fourteen coming on the offensive glass for Wright State.

Coach Greg Kampe went 13-deep for the first time this season. Kampe had gone 12 deep on five occasions this season and at least 10 in 12 games.

After seven lead changes in the first six minutes of action, the Raiders went on a stretch of 5-of-5 from the floor midway through the half, as the Golden Grizzlies committed consecutive turnovers. The stretch would kickstart a 30-12 run for Wright State into the break.

Despite shooting over 50-percent from the floor in the opening 20 minutes, Oakland went 1-of-8 from deep as the Raiders hit 6-of-13 from distance. The Raiders put up 21 shots to the Golden Grizzlies 14 in the first half.

Oakland returns to the Blacktop on Sunday, January 5, to take on Northern Kentucky (9-6, 1-2 HL) at 3 pm.

Notes
  • Making its 10th start together was the combo of Kevin Kangu, Brad Brechting, Xavier Hill-Mais, Daniel Oladapo and Tray Maddox Jr. The lineup is 5-5 on the season. This was the second-straight outing for the grouping as Madison Monroe got the nod against Syracuse and Fairfield enlieu of Kangu.
  • Xavier Hill-Mais hit the game's first jumper on Oakland's opening possession.
  • Oakland entered the game first in the Horizon League in defense, only allowing a league-best 65.1 points per game. The 96 by Wright State was the most surrendered this season - previously 80 at No. 7 Maryland - and most No. 8 Michigan State scored 99 at the Breslin Center on Dec. 21, 2018. Oakland has held opponents to under 60 points four times this season.
  • Opponents have hit just 39.3 percent of their field goals against Oakland, making the Golden Grizzlies' defense tops in the Horizon League coming into the game. Wright State knocked down 57-percent from the floor and 47-percent from beyond the arc.
  • Tray Maddox Jr. kept the Oakland three-point streak alive, hitting out of the first media timeout. Maddox has knocked down a triple in eight-straight outings. The last time Oakland did not convert a shot from behind the arc was on Jan. 30, 1988 vs. Wayne State University. The Golden Grizzlies have hit a three-ball in 985-consecutive games, which is the seventh-longest streak in the NCAA.
  • The game was back and forth off the start, having five lead changes by the first media timeout. There were seven total lead changes in the first half.
  • Wright State engineered a 9-2 run heading into the under-eight media after Oakland went scoreless for more than two minutes to build a nine point lead over the Golden Grizzlies. Oakland had two turnovers and went 0-for-2 from beyond the arc over the stretch.
  • Wright State hit five-straight field goals en route to its first double-digit lead of the game at the 5:08 mark in the opening half.
  • Brechting hit double digits by half to lead Oakland at the break. It was sixth game in double figures on the season.
  • The Golden Grizzlies three-point woes returned, going 1-of-8 in the opening half and 3-of-18 for the game.
  • Oakland assisted on 12 of 14 field goals in the first frame, finishing with 21 on 26 field goals. The total is the second-highest tally of the year, as the Golden Grizzlies dished out 22 last time out against Detroit Mercy.
  • Oakland has had at least three scorers in double figures in three-straight outings and at least two in four-consecutive. It was the first time with five double-digit scorers since the season opener on Nov. 5 against Goshen. The last time the Golden Grizzlies had just one double-digit scorer was against No. 16/15 Michigan State on Dec. 14.
  • The 30-point deficit with 4:19 to go was the largest deficit Oakland has faced since trailing Michigan State by 29 with 7:41 to play on Dec. 14. The biggest deficit this season came at No. 7 Maryland by 35 with 3:40 to play on Nov. 16.
  • Xavier Hill-Mais hit double figures for the 11th-straight outing and 14th time this season.
  • Coach Greg Kampe went 13-deep for the first time this season. Kampe has gone 12 deep on five occasions this season and at least 10 in 12 games this season.
  • The 96 points by Wright State is the most surrendered by the Golden Grizzlies this season. Maryland had the most coming into the matchup, putting 80 up on Oakland on Nov. 16.
  • Madison Monroe hit a career-high 10 points in 24 minutes of action. Monroe finished with two assists and a career-best three steals.
  • Babatunde Sowunmi had a career-high five points and six rebounds - four coming on the offensive glass.
  • Tray Maddox Jr. hit a three-pointer in his eighth-straight outing. Maddox is second on the team with 19 made triples this season.
