
CINCINNATI – Susan LaGrand swam to three of Oakland's four first place finishes Friday night from the Keating Aquatic Center as the women's swimming and diving team finished day one of competition leading University of Cincinnati and Kenyon College 319-318 and 319-194 respectively.
On the men's side, the Golden Grizzlies trail UC, 341-254, but are ahead of Kenyon College 254-214 heading into day two.
LaGrand cruised to the top spot in the 100 butterfly (55.41) and 100 backstroke (55.72). The sophomore and teammates
Grace Shinske,
Sydney McDowell and
Katie Colwell swam to a first place finish in the 200 medley relay in 1:44.66.
Taylor Bailey recorded the other top finish on the women's side as the sophomore finished the 100 breaststroke in a season best 102.99.
Christian Bart tallied two second place finishes in the 100 breaststroke (56.13) and 200 free relay (1:23.63) along with
Mack Flowers,
Ryan Geheb and
Rudy Aguilar. The Grand Rapids, Mich. native also finished third in the 200 medley relay with teammates Flowers, Geheb and
Marko Khotynetskyi in 1:32.14.
In diving
Bernie Turchi placed second in both the 1 and 3-meter diving competition. Turchi scored a 249.50 in the 1-meter competition and 257.45 in the 3-meter.
Jordan Smith was the only diver on the day to break the 300-plus plateau, scoring 318.55 on the 3-meter board. Smith finished second in the 1-meter earning a score of 246.85 on the day.
The Golden Grizzlies continue competition tomorrow beginning at 10 a.m.
