Brad Brechting scored 20 points, pulled down eight rebounds and went 10-for-10 from the free throw line as Oakland pulled away in the second half to defeat UIC 86-72 Thursday at the O'rena. With Oakland, Green Bay and Detroit Mercy winning tonight, the Golden Grizzlies have clinched a top-four seed for the Horizon League Tournament.
Brechting is now averaging 19 points and 10 rebounds in his last eight games and has scored in double figures in his last 10 games.
Jaevin Cumberland recorded 16 points, six assists and six rebounds, while
Tray Maddox Jr. scored 15 points, grabbed five rebounds and went 3-for-4 from beyond the arc.
Karmari Newman scored 10 of his 13 points in the second half, plus tallied four rebounds.
Xavier Hill-Mais added 13 points.
Oakland led at halftime 39-36 and pulled away in the second half, outscoring the Flames 47-36. The Golden Grizzlies forced 20 UIC turnovers, the most forced by Oakland this season, and scored 16 points off turnovers.
Oakland dished out 23 assists on 25 field goals made and recorded 11 steals.
Oakland has won seven of the last eight meetings against the Flames and is 5-1 all-time in the O'rena against UIC.
The Golden Grizzlies will conclude the regular season Saturday, March 2 against IUPUI at 4 p.m. inside the O'rena. Oakland will then host a quarterfinal game against a to-be-determined opponent Wednesday, March 6 at 7 p.m.
