GOLDEN GRIZZLIES OFFENSE STRUGGLES, FALLS TO #16/15 MICHIGAN STATE, 72-49

Oakland Men's Basketball forced No. 16/15 Spartans into 33 three-point attempts, holding MSU to just 21-percent from deep.

Oakland University Men's Basketball fell to No. 16/15 Michigan State, 72-49, at Little Caesars Arena in the 2019-20 edition of College Basketball in the D. Xavier Hill-Mais paced the Golden Grizzlies with 10 points and seven rebounds.

Despite woes on the offensive end, Oakland's defense forced the Spartans out to the perimeter, putting up 33 three-pointers. MSU shot just 21-percent from beyond the arc. Michigan State's 72-point effort was below its season average of 79.2. Only one Spartan hit double-figures - Aaron Henry with 10 points. 

Blake Lampman and Jackie Harris came alive late, knocking down a pair of three's apiece in the final five minutes of play. This is the second outing this season Harris has hit multiple three-pointers. Lampman has hit a three-ball in five-consecutive outings and leads the team with 19 on the year. 

Hill-Mais' 10 points were complimented by Lampman's nine. Harris and Daniel Oladapo chipped in six apiece. The Golden Grizzly bench was active in the second half, scoring 24 in the final 20 minutes.

Xavier Tillman had a game-high 13 rebounds for Michigan State. The Spartans won the battle on the glass, 54-31. Cassius Winston, the 2018 Big Ten Player of the Year, was held to nine points and four assists in 29 minutes of action. 

The game opened with both teams struggling from the floor. With Oakland leading 6-4, the Spartans came alive with a 20-3 run spanning nearly eight minutes. The stretch saw the Golden Grizzlies go scoreless for more than two minutes on two occasions. 

Oakland's shooting woes continued throughout the opening frame, finishing 7-of-30 from the floor in the opening 20 minutes. The Golden Grizzlies dished out five helpers on the first seven baskets. Oakland attacked the paint early, notching 12 of the first half's 19 points in the lane. 

Hill-Mais and Oladapo paced Oakland with six points apiece in the first half. Hill-Mais had a team-high four rebounds in half. 

Thomas Kithier led the way for the Spartans with eight points at the break. Xavier Tillman and Kithier combined for 14 boards, eight and six respectively. 

Neither side shot well from beyond the arc in the first half, going a combined 4-of-20 from deep. 

Michigan State opened the second half on a 10-0 run, kicked off by a pair of buckets from downtown. 

Out of the under-16 media timeout in the second, Oakland held Michigan State scoreless for 3:27, cutting into the deficit with buckets from Hill-Mais and CJ Gettelfinger

The Golden Grizzlies return to action on Wednesday, December 18, at Syracuse (5-5, 1-1 ACC) on ESPNU. Tip off is set for 8 pm.  


Notes

For the 10th time this season, the combination of Brad Brechting, Xavier Hill-Mais, Kevin Kangu, Tray Maddox Jr. and Daniel Oladapo. Last time out, Lampman made his first-career start, marking the first time this season Oladapo didn't start. 

Today's game marked the 18th matchup between Oakland and Michigan State. The first-ever game came in 1998 in the then-brand new O'rena. The Golden Grizzlies have never defeated the Spartans. 

Keeping the streak alive! Tray Maddox Jr. ended a Spartan spurt with a three ball with 12:22 remaining in the half. The Golden Grizzlies have knocked down at least one three-pointer in 981-consecutive outings. The last time OU didn't hit a three was Jan. 30, 1988 against Wayne State. The streak is the seventh-longest in the NCAA. 

The first field goal from the floor came courtesy of Xavier Hill-Mais 3:06 into the game. Gabe Brown of Michigan State hit a pair of free throws on a Kevin Kangu foul with 17:11 on the clock in the first half for the game's first points. 

Oakland's first six points came in the paint. 

Blake Lampman was the first man off the bench for Oakland, checking in at the 13:14 mark in the first half. 

Midway through the first half, the Spartans engineered an 8-0 spurt over 2:30 minutes before Tray Maddox Jr. buried a three to end the drought for OU. MSU's run started with 15:17 on the clock and Oakland leading 6-4, and stretched out to 20-3.  

Oakland shot 24-percent for the first 10 minutes of the game, going scoreless for more than two minutes on two occasions. 

First half line | MSU 34 - Oakland 19 | Oakland went 7-of-30 (23%) from the floor to Michigan State's 14-of-29 (48%), MSU was +12 on the glass, OU was +3 in turnovers. 

Kenny Pittman Jr. came in off the bench during the second half to knock down his third three-ball of the season. 

Blake Lampman knocked down at least one triple for the fifth-straight outing. He paces the Golden Grizzlies with 19 three-pointers this season. 

Emmnauel Newsome converted his first field goal as a Golden Grizzly, gathering an offensive rebound - another collegiate first for the freshman - and laying it back in for the second chance points. 

Xavier Hill-Mais recorded his 10th double-digit effort of the season, finishing with 10 points. 

Jackie Harris knocked down two three-pointers to match his career high. 

Michigan State's 54 rebounds is the first time since 2017 an OU opponent grabbed more than 50 boards against the Golden Grizzlies. The last time it happened was on Jan. 8, 2017, when UIC pulled down 56 rebounds. 

College Basketball in the D boasted an attendance of 18,145 at Little Caesars Arena.
