
INDIANAPOLIS - Sami Lopez scored the game-winning goal and assisted on
Nikki May's first goal of the season as No. 6 seed Oakland upset No. 3 seed IUPUI, 2-0, in quarterfinal action of the Horizon League Tournament on a rainy Monday night at Michael A. Carroll Stadium.
Alexa Sabbagh also assisted on Lopez's goal while
Jaimie Leas posted her fourth shutout of the season.
This marks the second consecutive season Oakland has upset the No. 3 seed which sets up a semifinal rematch at No. 1 seed Milwaukee on Thursday, Nov. 7 at 7 p.m.
After a scoreless first half, Oakland wasted little time getting on the board in the 49th minute.
Ashley Postma took a long pass, drove hard down the right side and sent in a cross over to Sabbagh who took a shot that deflected off an IUPUI defender up into the air towards a charging Lopez who fired a volley past goalkeeper Sophia Lipka for a 1-0 lead.
In the 70th minute, Lopez pressed the attack up the left side and slotted the ball over to May who fired a one-time shot into the left side of the net from just outside the top of the box giving Oakland a pivotal insurance goal for a 2-0 lead.
