NO. 6 OAKLAND OPENS HORIZON LEAGUE TOURNAMENT AT NO. 3 IUPUI

ROCHESTER, Mich. –
The No. 6 seed Oakland women's soccer team opens the 2019 Horizon League Tournament with a quarterfinal match at No. 3 seed IUPUI on Monday, Nov. 4 at 7 p.m. The match will be broadcast live from Michael A. Carroll Stadium on ESPN+.
 
MATCH-UP
  • Oakland (6-7-3, 4-3-2 HL) is 17-3 over the last 20 meetings against IUPUI (12-6-1, 6-3 HL) and have won the last seven consecutive matches against the Jaguars
  • Earlier this season, Ashley Postma scored the game-winning goal in the 86th minute to secure a 1-0 win over the Jaguars (10/12). Natalie Abbate took penalty kick shot that was deflected to Sami Lopez who passed out over to Postma who delivered the finish.
NOTES
  • This is the second consecutive season the Golden Grizzlies enter the tournament as the No. 6 seed. Last season, Oakland stunned No. 3 seed Northern Kentucky, 2-1, in the quarterfinals.
  • In the semifinals, Oakland pushed No. 1 seed Milwaukee to the limit playing to a 1-1 double overtime draw before eventually falling in penalty kicks to end the season.
  • Jaimie Leas recorded her third shutout of the season leading Oakland to a 0-0 double overtime draw against Horizon League leader Milwaukee on Senior Day (10/27). This marked the first time since Sept. 27, 2017 that Milwaukee hadn't scored a goal in a regular season league game.
  • Oakland was the only team to earn a point against the Panthers in league play which in turn clinched a spot in the Horizon League Tournament.
  • Oakland closed out the regular season with a 2-0 setback at UIC (11/1)
  • Alexa Sabbagh leads the team in points (13) and goals (6) which rank tied for seventh and tied for fourth in the league respectively.
  • Sami Lopez (10) is second on the team in points and also leads the team in assists (4) and ranks second in goals (3)
  • Sierra Grodsinsky (3), Kendra Zak (3) and Nikki May (3) rank second on the team in assists flowed by Ashley Postma (2) and Natalie Abbate (2) in third
  • Taylor Thalheimer (2), Shophie Wilsey (2) and Postma (2) rank third in goals with Brooklyn Blake (1), Postma (1), Sierra Grodsinsky (1) and Carmela Barro (1) each recording a tally on the season
  • Blake netted her first collegiate goal in a 1-0 double overtime win against Youngstown State (9/20)
  • The Golden Grizzlies have already surpassed their goal total from a season ago with 18
  • Lopez was named Nike Horizon League Player of the Week (9/2) after scoring two goals against Eastern Kentucky including the overtime game-winner
  • Oakland University is celebrating 25 years of women's soccer this season
