ROCHESTER, Mich. - Carmela Barro recorded her first career goal, the game winner, as the Oakland women's soccer team defeated rival Detroit Mercy 2-1 in the annual Metro Series Wednesday from the Oakland Soccer Field presented by United Shore.
The Golden Grizzlies (4-5-2, 2-1-1 HL) found themselves trailing early as Detroit Mercy (2-8-2, 0-3-1 HL) scored in the fifth minute to take a 1-0 lead.
Less than three minutes later Oakland's
Alexa Sabbagh added her fifth goal of the season off an assist from
Kendra Zak and
Sophie Wilsey to deadlock the game at 1-1 for the remainder of the first half.
At the 72nd
minute mark of the second half,
Nikki May took a free kick that bounced back to Barro at the top of the box where she sailed it to the top left of the goal to give the Golden Grizzlies a 2-1 lead and the game over the Titans.
Oakland now leads the all-time series against Detroit Mercy 15-7-2 and currently has the 3-1 advantage in the Metro Series.
The Golden Grizzlies return to the Oakland Soccer Field for Homecoming weekend on Saturday, Oct. 12 at 1 p.m. against IUPUI.
