ROCHESTER, Mich. - With just 29 seconds left in regulation,
Napoleon Outlaw III scored the equalizer off a rebound shot from
Nebojsa Popovic as Oakland played visiting Western Illinois to a 1-1 double overtime draw in the season opener on Friday night at the Oakland Soccer Field.
Sullivan Lauderdale made three saves in goal.
The Golden Grizzlies almost pulled off the win in dramatic fashion as
Travis Harrington let a long shot fly from approximately 35 yards out that was headed for the right post before WIU goalkeeper Tim Trilk made a diving save to keep the game even with less than three seconds left on the clock in regulation.
Oakland out shot WIU 21-8 and held a 10-3 corner kick advantage.
The Golden Grizzlies open a two-game road swing at Marshall on Monday, Aug. 27 at 7 p.m.
