ROCHESTER, Mich. -- Xavier Hill-Mais scored a career high 30 points and nine rebounds as the Oakland men's basketball team dropped a hard-fought home opener to Toledo 87-86 Friday night at the O'rena. Hill-Mais made a career high 14 field goals and registered his first career 30-point game.

James Beck also scored a career high with 13 points and pulled down nine rebounds. Five of Beck's nine rebounds were on the offensive glass. 

Jaevin Cumberland scored 14 points, scoring in double figures for the third time in his career. Cumberland drained a team high four three-pointers while also handing out a career high six assists. He matched a career high with five field goals made. 

Brailen Neely, last season's Horizon League assists leader, dished out a game high nine assists. All 12 of his points came in the second half. 

The Golden Grizzlies got off to a 19-5 start in the opening four minutes and scored 16 points off 13 Toledo turnovers, while only committing three. Toledo took its first lead of the game with 8:05 remaining in the second half and never surrendered the lead.

Down by one with four seconds remaining, Neely missed an opportunity to tie the game by failing to convert his second free-throw and Hill-Mais grabbed the offensive rebound but missed the put back. 

Oakland had an attendance of 3,841, which is the highest for a home opener since joining the Horizon League.
