ROCHESTER, Mich. - Nebojsa Popovic scored his third goal of the season in the 80th minute off a feed from
Napoleon Outlaw III as the Golden Grizzlies came up short against No. 14 Michigan, 2-1, in front of a new Oakland Soccer Field record attendance of 2,344 at the Fill the Hill Game on Wednesday night. The previous record was 2,117 against Michigan on Sept. 30, 2009.
Sullivan Lauderdale made two of his six total saves in spectacular fashion to keep the game scoreless early on the first half.
Popovic almost gave Oakland the lead in the 37th minute but hit the crossbar. Michigan then got on the board just before halftime in the 44th minute off a penalty kick and added another goal in the 58th minute for a 2-0 lead.
Popovic took a pass from Outlaw III from the left side and beat U-M keeper Henry Mashburn to the right corner to pull Oakland within a goal at 2-1. He almost added the equalizer in the 88th minute but his attempt just missed to the left side.
Oakland resumes league play with a homecoming showdown against Northern Kentucky on Saturday, Oct. 6 at 4 p.m.
