OAKLAND MEN'S SOCCER 2016 SPRING SEASON REVIEW

ROCHESTER, Mich. -
The Oakland men's soccer team completed the 2016 spring season with great success against some of top the programs in Michigan and the country.

HIGHLIGHTS


â-ªOakland finished with a 3-2-3 overall record

â-ªThe Golden Grizzlies opened the season with a 10-0 international exhibition against Masters FA (Toronto, Ontario) at the Oakland Sports Bubble (Feb. 19). Wes Mink and Zach Walker combined for the shutout.

â-ªOakland fell 3-1 to Northwestern Ohio of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) in the College Clash at the Legacy Center in Brighton, Mich. (Mar. 12). Mink and Walker split time in goal.

â-ªThe Golden Grizzlies played Notre Dame to a 1-1 draw to open play in the Michigan Bucks College Cup at Ultimate Soccer Arenas (Mar. 19). The Fighting Irish finished the 2015 season ranked No. 11 with an 11-5-6 overall record and 4-2-2 Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) mark, was runner up in the ACC tournament and advanced to the round of 16 in the NCAA Tournament.

â-ªOakland concluded the Bucks College Cup with a 3-2 win over former Horizon League member Butler with two goals from Austin Ricci and one from Jimmy Todd while Mink picked up the win. The Bulldogs, under the direction of Oakland men's soccer Hall of Honor inductees head coach Paul Snape and assistant coach Jason Perry, finished 10-4-4 advancing to the quarterfinals of the BIGEAST Tournament.

â-ªThe Black and Gold played Michigan and Western Michigan to a 0-0 tie at the Oakland Sports Bubble (Mar. 25) with Walker picking up both shutouts. U-M finished the fall season with a 8-6-4 overall record and 3-3-3 Big Ten mark falling to Maryland in the Big Ten Tournament. Western Michigan went 11-4-4 with a 3-1-1 Mid-American Conference (MAC) record during the 2015 campaign before falling to Akron in the semifinals of the MAC Tournament.

â-ªOakland concluded play at the Oakland Sports Bubble with a 3-2 setback to Bowling Green (Apr. 2) on goals from Travis Harrington and Jacob VanderLaan with Mink and Walker seeing time between the pipes. The Falcons concluded the 2015 season at 9-9-1 with a 1-4-0 MAC record.

â-ªThe Golden Grizzlies wrapped up the spring season with a 5-1 win over Saginaw Valley State in the Michigan Cup at the Ultimate Soccer Arenas (Apr. 9). Oakland got goals from Ricci, Keenan King, Matt Rickard, Shawn Claud Lawson and Raphael Reynolds with Walker picking up the win in goal. The Cardinals, under the direction of former Oakland assistant head coach Andy Wagstaff, finished the 2015 season 15-4-1 with a 12-2 Great Lakes Athletic Intercollegiate Conference (GLAIC) record advancing to the NCAA Division II second round.

Oakland kicks off the 2016 season with an exhibition game at Bowling Green on Saturday, Aug. 13th at 7 p.m.
