Men's Soccer Falls to #12 Marshall on the Road

HUNTINGTON, W.V. — Oakland closed out their non-conference matches for the season, falling to #12 Marshall 1-0 on Tuesday evening at Hoops Family Field.
The Golden Grizzlies' offense was kept at bay in the match, as they tallied a season-low two shots in the match.
The match began with Oakland on the defensive as the Herd pressed early. Sebastian Stanaj made several critical saves, notably stopping attempts from Joao Alves and Louie Salkeld around the 18th and 35th minutes, respectively. Despite Stanaj's efforts, Marshall opened the scoring as Ryan Holmes managed to break through with a goal for the Herd in the 35th minute, giving Marshall a 1-0 lead.
Oakland continued to face pressure throughout the period, as Marshall maintained offensive momentum. The first half concluded with the Herd holding a 1-0 lead, with Oakland looking to adjust after the break.
The second half began with Oakland making key defensive contributions, highlighted by Stanaj's saves. He denied shots from both Alvaro Alvarez and Salkeld early in the half, maintaining pressure on the home team's offense.
In his third career start Stanaj had a very solid performance, registering a career-high seven saves, facing 19 shots.
Oakland's closest opportunity to equalize came from Abdul Al-Rashed, whose shot in the 61st minute struck the left woodwork, and a shot by Kevin Hubbell that was sent over the top in the 74th minute.
In five matches against ranked opponents this season, Oakland has yet to be outscored by more than a single goal, showing promising signs for how they fare against tough competition.
The Golden Grizzlies return to the pitch on October 18 as they host Robert Morris at 4 p.m. for Senior Day.
