ROCHESTER, Mich. - The Oakland men's golf team will travel to Florida this weekend to compete in the Horizon League Championship at Mission Inn Golf and Tennis Resort (Par 72, 6,816 yards) in Howey-in-the-Hills, Fla. The three-day, 54-hole league tournament begins Friday at 7:30 a.m. with the Golden Grizzlies teeing off at 9:10 a.m. in the final pairings.
Oakland is looking to improve on last year's runner-up finish at the Horizon League Championship, it's best place at a league tournament in program history and its highest finish since 1995. Evan Bowser returns to Mission Inn Golf and Tennis Resort to defend his individual title as he captured medalist honors last season in a two-hole playoff to become the fourth player in program history in win the conference tournament. He went on to place tied for 33rd at the NCAA Noblesville Regional. Jacob Johnson earned All-Tournament Team honors last season after sharing seventh place with a 12-over-par 228.
The Golden Grizzlies come into the tournament with just over a 295 stroke average, good for third in the Horizon League. Last time out, Oakland placed sixth at the Earl Yestingsmeier Memorial Invitational behind Jake Kneen's top-10 finish with a 8-over par 218 including a 69 (-1) in the second round. Bowser finished top-20 with a total score of 222 (+12).
Bowser leads the team with a 73.24 stroke average, followed closely by Kneen, last season's Freshman of the Year, with a 73.52. Bowser is in his senior year and is the first player in program history to be named an all-league selection in his first three seasons. He broke the school record for career rounds under-par and is the school's career stroke-average leader at 73.54. Kneen leads the team with five rounds this Spring of even-par or better and shot an opening round 71 (-1) at last season's league championship.
