ROCHESTER, Mich. - The Oakland baseball team continues Horizon League play this weekend as they face Youngstown State in a three-game series beginning with a doubleheader on Thursday at 1 p.m. ET. The series will be shifted to Youngstown due to unplayable field conditions at the Oakland Baseball Field but the Golden Grizzlies will be considered the home team for all three games.
SERIES
Oakland is 7-7 all-time against YSU but dropped two of three games last season at Eastwood Field.
SCOUTING YSU
The Penguins are the defending Horizon League Tournament champions and earned their first ever win during an NCAA Regional with a 5-2 victory over Indiana State before being knocked out by Stanford. Youngstown State is 5-16 so far this season including just 1-8 in league play. YSU is led offensively by Frank Califano hitting .337 with a team-best 10 RBIs. On the mound, Jeremy Quinlan has made five starts this season with a 5.33 ERA and 21 strikeouts.
HORIZON LEAGUE RANKINGS
In league play, OF Robby Enslen is tops in hits with 16, third in hitting at .432, second in doubles with four and sixth in RBIs with nine and overall he is eighth in hitting at .329. RHP Aaron Dehn is 10th in the Horizon League with a 4.35 ERA, while RHP Nate Green ranks in the top-10 in strikeouts with 22. Freshman C Matt DiLeo is sixth in the Horizon League hitting .375 in league play.
PRESEASON ACCOLADES
Robby Enslen was named the Horizon League Preseason Player of the Year, while Mike Brosseau was selected to the preseason all-league team on Wednesday. Enslen was an All-Region second team and All-Horizon League first team selection last season leading the league in hitting (.378) and was third in slugging (.432) and on-base percentage (.440). He also closed the season ranked in the top-10 in hits, RBIs, home runs and doubles. Enslen snapped his school-record 32-game hitting streak in the series finale at Southern Miss. Brosseau closed 2014 ranked in the top-10 in the Horizon League in hitting (.321), slugging (.432) and doubles (12) to be named to the All-Horizon League First Team.
Both Enslen and Brosseau were named to the College Sports Madness Preseason All-Horizon League first team, while Zach Sterry was selected to the second team. The 2014 Horizon League All-Freshman Team honoree, Sterry will look to improve on his rookie campaign that saw him finish second on the team in home runs and extra-base hits.
VETERAN ACE Jason Hager returns after being granted a sixth-year of eligibility to be the ace of Oakland's pitching staff. He was in the top-10 in the Horizon League last season in ERA, innings pitched, strikeouts and opposing batting average. He ranks second in program history in innings pitched (276.2) and strikeouts (213), while being named an all-league honoree in 2013. Hager is 14.0 innings and 57 strikeouts away from being the school's all-time leader in the respective categories.
COACH MOOSE AT THE HELM Head coach John Musachio enters his eighth season as the head coach and 10th overall with the program. He became the all-time winningest coach in program history last season and currently sits at 140 for his career. He was named The Summit League Coach of the Year in 2013. He has had four players drafted under his tenure, Jake Paulson in the 27th round and Jake Morton in the 39th round last season, Hayden Fox in the 21st round in 2012 and Shane McCatty in the 34th round in 2009.
