MILWAUKEE - Peyton Apsey scored a team-high 19 points as the Oakland women's basketball team (10-12, 4-5 HL) fell at Milwaukee (8-13, 4-5 HL), 66-60, Friday afternoon at the Klotsche Center.
Apsey led the team in scoring for just the third time this season for her 10th career double-figure scoring effort. Elena Popkey recorded 10 points with four assists to surpass 300 assists for her career. Nola Anderson added 10 points and has scored in double-figures in seven of nine league contests.
Oakland grabbed a 53-46 advantage behind a 7-1 run late in the second half, but Milwaukee would battle back to tie the game at 56-56 with three minutes to play. The Panthers would score eight of the final 12 points by shooting 8-for-10 from the free throw line to earn the victory and finished the game shooting 81 percent from the foul line. Anderson scored all 10 of her points in the second period.
The Golden Grizzlies trailed 30-28 at the half as Apsey tallied 10 of her 19 points in the opening period. Oakland fell behind by seven points before going on a 7-2 run led by an Apsey 3-pointer to close the half. The Golden Grizzlies defense held UWM to 0-for-12 from behind the arc in the first 20 minutes.
UWM was led by Ashley Green with 31 points and 10 rebounds, the most points allowed to a single player this season, while Jaleesa Armstrong and Kelsey Cunningham each added 10 points.
The Golden Grizzlies will continue their four-game road stint next week when they travel to Youngstown State and Cleveland State.
