GREEN BAY, Wis. - Olivia Nash recorded a double-double and Elena Popkey scored 19 points as the Oakland women's basketball team (10-11, 4-4 HL) upset first-place Green Bay (17-4, 7-1 HL), 70-67, Wednesday night at the Kress Center. The Golden Grizzlies gave the Phoenix, the third-ranked mid-major team in the country, only its sixth loss at home in league play in the last 16 seasons.
Popkey scored her 1,000th career point in the victory, becoming the 26th player in program history to surpass the 1,000 point mark. Nash finished with 21 points and a season-best 14 rebounds for her seventh double-double of the season. Peyton Apsey tied a career-high with eight assists and added nine points.
Oakland trailed by as many as 11 points early in the second half but cut the lead to one after a pair of Zakiya Minifee free throws with 6:10 remaining. Moments later the Golden Grizzlies would take its first lead since the opening half after back-to-back 3-pointers by Popkey and Nash. The Phoenix would tie the game with 2:34 remaining, but the Golden Grizzlies roared back with an Apsey triple to go up 66-61 with 44 seconds on the clock. GB continued to hit shots to keep the game close, but Nola Anderson and Sinclair Russell each hit a pair of clutch free throws in the waning moments to seal the upset win.
The Golden Grizzlies trailed 33-29 at the half despite holding a three-point advantage after going on a 15-6 run late in the period. GB would close the half on its own 8-1 run to take the four-point lead into intermission. This marks the first win for Oakland when trailing at half.
Green Bay was led by Mehryn Kraker with 17 points and Tesha Buck added 14 points and nine rebounds.
Oakland will continue its road swing through the state of Wisconsin on Friday as they face Milwaukee in another Horizon League matchup beginning at noon ET.
