ROCHESTER, Mich. - The 2014 campaign marked the debut of first-year head coach Margaret Saurin who is only the second head coach in Oakland women's soccer history. Under her direction, the women's soccer team made incredible strides finishing third in the Horizon League regular season and advanced to the semifinals of the league tournament.
TEAM HIGHLIGHTS:
â-ª During quarterfinal action of the Horizon League Tournament, No. 3 seed Oakland and No. 6 seed Cleveland State played to a 1-1 double overtime draw. In the shootout, Mia Leibold scored a 10th round goal to advance the Golden Grizzlies 8-7 on penalty kicks at the Oakland Soccer Field.
â-ª The Golden Grizzlies were a perfect 4-0 at home during conference play.
â-ª Oakland finished second in the league in saves (95) and third in shots (231).
â-ª Oakland recorded four shutouts on the season.
â-ª The Golden Grizzlies scored four goals in a game twice and with 21 total on the season.
INDIVIDUAL HIGHLIGHTS:
â-ª Four players earned All-Horizon League postseason honors. Kyla Kellermann and Alice Palmer were first-team selections, while Joan Sieja was named second-team and Vlad Gurovski earned an all-freshman team nod.
â-ª Kellermann and Palmer were named to the College Sports Madness Horizon League 2014 All-Conference Teams. Kellermann was selected to the collegiate website's Horizon League All-Conference First Team while Palmer garnered All-Conference Second Team honors.
â-ª Palmer led the team points (17), goals (7) and assists (3). She ranked tied for second in the league in goals, including two game-winners, second in shots (70), third in points and eighth in assists.
â-ª Kellermann was second on the team in goals (6) and points (12) with one game-winner against Wright State. She finished tied for fourth in the league in goals and goals per game (.38).
â-ª Kellermann closed out her illustrious career tied for eighth all time in program history in goals (28) and tied for fourth in games played (81).
â-ª Gurovski, Claudia Krupicz and Jenna Taylor finished third on the team in goals (2) and points (4).
â-ª Joan Sieja, Jenny Rosonke and Cecilie Dokka each finished second on the team in assists (2).
â-ª Alison Holland ranked second in the league in goals against average (.82), third in shutouts per game (.29) and tied for fifth in shutouts (4). She finished seventh in saves per game (3.50) and eighth in saves (49).
â-ª Stephanie Bukovec was named Horizon League Defensive Player of the Week for the week tallying a league-best 12 saves with a career-high nine saves vs. KSU. She earned her first win of the season shutting out St. Francis in the second half.
â-ª Saurin earned her first victory at the helm of the Golden Grizzlies against Saginaw Valley State (Aug. 28).
POSTSEASON HIGHLIGHTS:
â-ª Kellermann named to the 2014 Fall Academic All-League Team with 3.67 GPA majoring in psychology.
