CHICAGO - Nola Anderson scored a team-high 22 points as the Oakland women's basketball team (11-17, 5-10) fell at UIC (16-11, 6-8), 64-54, Saturday evening at the UIC Pavilion.
Anderson collected her third 20-point performance of the season and also tied for the team-high with eight rebounds. Peyton Apsey and Elena Popkey each tallied nine points.
The Golden Grizzlies trailed by as many as 12 points in the second half but used a 9-0 run to cut the lead to 49-47 with 7:41 remaining in the half as Anderson finished an old-fashioned three-point play. The Flames battled back and used a 6-0 run of their own as Marissa Grossfield hit a triple to take back control and secure the win.
Oakland fell behind 27-23 at the half despite starting the game 8-0, led by five points by Anderson, and not allowing the Flames to score for the first five minutes. The Golden Grizzlies led 17-9 halfway through the period as they forced nine UIC turnovers. The Flames battled back and took its first lead of the game at 20-19 with 6:36 in the half. UIC's Ruvanna Campbell led all scorers at intermission with 13.
The Flames were led by Campbell who finished with her league-leading 20th double-double of the season with 26 points and 15 rebounds.
The Golden Grizzlies will conclude the regular season on Thursday when they host Valparaiso inside the Athletics Center O'rena starting at 7 p.m. It will be Senior Night as Peyton Apsey, Amy Carlton and Zakiya Minifee will be honored before and after the game.
