WOMEN'S SOCCER 2015 SEASON REVIEW

ROCHESTER, Mich. - The 2015 Oakland women's soccer team made history by winning its first-ever Horizon League Tournament title in thrilling overtime fashion and making its eighth NCAA Tournament appearance.

TEAM HIGHLIGHTS

â-ª After starting the first nine games of the season 0-5-4, the Golden Grizzlies went unbeaten in their next 11 games, going 8-0-3 and earning the No. 2 seed in the Horizon League Tournament.

â-ª During Oakland's 11-game unbeaten streak, the Golden Grizzlies outscored opponents 15-2 and recorded seven-consecutive shutouts.

â-ª On Aug. 27 , Oakland hosted Michigan State in front of a women's soccer record crowd of 1,157 as the Golden Grizzlies and Spartans played to a 1-1 draw.

â-ª The Golden Grizzlies defeated Duquesne 3-0 at the Oakland Soccer Field on Sept. 20 to earn its first win of the season. Duquesne would go on to win the Atlantic 10 conference and also compete in the NCAA Tournament.

â-ª Oakland allowed no shots on goal against first place Northern Kentucky on Oct. 21, handing the Norse just their second league loss of the season.

â-ª In 21 games, Oakland recorded nine shutouts, tied for fifth most in a single season in school history.

â-ª The Golden Grizzlies earned the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) College Team Academic Award for the fifth consecutive year.

â-ª Oakland had just one loss in conference play going 6-1-2, the fewest losses since 2010.

INDIVIDUAL HIGHLIGHTS

â-ª Joan Sieja was named to the 2015 NSCAA All-Great Lakes Region Second Team. She was Oakland's first All-Region selection since 2012.

â-ª Emily Zweng had one of the best seasons in goal in school history finishing the season with a 7-1-3 record including eight shutouts and a goals-against-average of 0.54, the second-best in program history.

â-ª Zweng's goals-against-average ranks ninth in the NCAA, and is the one of two freshman goalies in the nation who finished ranked in top 25.

â-ª The Golden Grizzlies landed four players on the all-league teams as Sieja and Alice Palmer were named to the All-Horizon League first team, while Zweng and Maria Zandi were selected to the all-freshman team.

â-ª At the end of the regular season, Zweng's 0.17 goals-against average ranked first in the nation among Division I goalies.

â-ª Zweng notched an assist against Valparaiso, becoming the first Oakland goalkeeper to record an assist in the Division I era.

â-ª Brianne Horne finished her career with 82 games played, tying her for second-most in program history. Sieja finished with 81 career games played, tied for third all-time.

â-ª Sieja finished the season ranking second in the Horizon League in assists with eight.

POSTSEASON HIGHLIGHTS

â-ª Oakland won its first-ever Horizon League Tournament title by defeating Wright State 1-0 in overtime. It was the first tournament title since 2012.

â-ª By winning the Horizon League Tournament, the Golden Grizzlies earned the automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament and faced No.3 seed Notre Dame in the opening round, making its eighth NCAA Tournament appearance and first since 2012.

â-ª With the season on the line, Sarah Reynolds scored the golden goal in the 95th minute off a corner kick from Sieja.

â-ª After defeating Northern Kentucky 1-0 in the regular season, the two teams squared-off in the semifinals of the Horizon League Tournament where the Golden Grizzlies won in penalty kicks 4-1 to earn a spot in the Horizon League Championship game.

â-ª Jamie Horne, Zweng, Reynolds and Sieja were named to the Horizon League All-Tournament team, with Sieja being named Tournament Most Valuable Player.
