OAKLAND MEN'S GOLF SIGNS TWO IN EARLY SIGNING PERIOD

Nov. 21, 2015

ROCHESTER, Mich. - Chris Handy and Matthew McCulloch each signed National Letters of Intent to play for the Golden Grizzlies, announced head men's golf coach Mark Engel on Saturday.

"This is a very important recruiting class for us, considering we have three seniors graduating this spring, and I think we've hit a home run by bringing Chris and Matthew from the UK to Oakland," said Engel. "Both have gone through the pressures of representing their countries, competing against great players in International events. That's true even in tournaments against each other. I think that will definitely help them right away here at Oakland. They both drive the ball well, they have good short games and they definitely aren't afraid to practice. They do just as well in the classroom."

Handy, a native of Tanfield Lea, England, won the England Boys County Champion of Champions tournament this year and is a two-time winner of the Durham County U-18 Boy's Championship. He was a member of England's U-16 National Team in 2014 where he played matches against Ireland, Scotland and Wales. Handy has been a member of the England Schoolboys Team for the past two seasons. He won the Faldo Series North of England U-18 Championship and finished third in at Faldo Series U-18 Grand Finals in Berlin, Germany.

McCulloch, a native of Stranraer, Scotland, has been a member of both the Scottish U-16 and U-18 National Boys Performance teams since 2013 where he has served as captain on seven occasions in international competition. He has recorded seven top-10 finished in Scottish National events since 2013 and has played on the Scotland Schools Team the past three years. In 2014, McCulloch won the Paul Lawrie Foundation Scottish Schools Boys Championship. Last season he was fourth at the SGU Junior Tour U-18 Championship and helped the Scotland Schools Team to a victory over England in the Schoolboys International Championship.

"I think they'd both love to be here right now but it won't be long before they arrive and go to work helping our team achieve its future goals," added Engel. "I'm really glad Matthew and Chris have joined us and look forward to them being part of our success at Oakland the next four years."
