INDIANAPOLIS- Oakland's Joan Sieja and Alice Palmer were named to the All-Horizon League first team, while Emily Zweng and Maria Zandi were selected to the all-freshman team, as voted by the league's head coaches and announced by the league office on Monday.
Sieja, a senior from Rochester Hills, Mich., earned her second all-league selection and first on the All-Horizon League first team. She led the Golden Grizzlies in points with 13 and assists with seven, good for fifth and second respectively in the conference, while starting in all 18 regular season games. Her three goals and 13 points are both career-highs.
Palmer, a junior from Poole, United Kingdom, received her third consecutive all-league honor and her second All-Horizon League first team selection. She was the top goal-scorer for the Golden Grizzlies, netting five goals which ranks fourth in the Horizon League while appearing in 17 games this season. Her 28 shots and .549 shots on goal percentage are career-highs while her two game-winning goals match a career-high.
Zandi, a native of Rochester, Mich., was second among Horizon League freshman in games-started with 17, and was the only Oakland freshman to start in as many games. She was a part of the Oakland back line which recorded five consecutive shutouts to end the regular season, allowing just four goals in conference play.
Zweng, a native of New Baltimore, Mich., allowed just two goals in 10 games for a goals-against-average of 0.21 and save percentage of .926. She was also named Horizon League Defensive Player of the Week on Oct. 5 and notched an assist against Valparaiso, becoming the first Oakland goalkeeper to record an assist in the Division I era.
