ROCHESTER, Mich. - Elena Popkey scored 21 points and Nola Anderson added 18 as Oakland (9-11, 3-4 HL) dropped a 72-64 decision to Cleveland State (12-8, 4-3 HL) in women's basketball action Saturday afternoon in the Athletics Center O'rena.
Popkey finished with her second 20-point performance of the season by shooting 50 percent (9-18) from the floor. Anderson collected her 12th double-digit scoring effort of the season. Olivia Nash added eight points with a team-best eight rebounds.
Oakland trailed by three going into halftime and were able to cut the deficit to one point in the second half but were never able to take the lead. Popkey and Anderson each tallied 10 points in the second period. Popkey hit a jumper with 1:16 remaining to make the score 63-59, but the Vikings would hit 7-of-9 free throws in the final minute to secure the victory.
Cleveland State led 32-29 at intermission as the Golden Grizzlies trailed by as many as nine late in the period. Oakland would go on a 8-0 run over a four-minute stretch to go down by only one with 3:12 in the half. Popkey scored 11 of her 21 points in the opening period.
The Vikings were led by Kiersten Green with 21 points on five 3-pointers, while Alexis Eckles collected a double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds.
The Golden Grizzlies will hit the road for a four-game stint away from the O'rena beginning with a two-game trip next week to the state of Wisconsin to face Green Bay on Feb. 4 and Milwaukee on Feb. 6.
