ROCHESTER, Mich. - Olivia Nash recorded a team-high 20 points and Peyton Apsey scored a career-high 17 points as the Oakland women's basketball team (9-9, 3-2 HL) defeated Youngstown State (14-4, 3-2 HL), 85-82, Saturday afternoon in the Athletics Center O'rena.
Nash tallied her fourth 20-point performance this season, while Apsey hit a career-best four 3-pointers including going 3-for-3 from behind the arc in the second half. Sinclair Russell netted 14 points for her second-straight double-figure game and Nola Anderson scored 13. Elena Popkey added 11 points with a team-high nine rebounds.
The Golden Grizzlies led by as many as 10 in the second half until Youngstown State went on a 11-0 run to take a one-point lead with 13:06 left on the clock. Both teams traded leads throughout the period until Popkey and Nash hit back-to-back three pointers with 1:49 remaining in regulation to go up 83-80. Amy Carlton would hit a pair of free throws in the final seconds to seal the win.
Oakland held a 44-38 advantage at the half after going on a 10-2 run late in the period capped by an Anderson 3-pointer. Nash and Russell each scored 12 points in the half as the Golden Grizzlies shot 51 percent from the floor.
The Penguins were led by Heidi Schlegel with 22 points and Nikku Arbanas with 20 points on 6-of-8 shooting from 3-point range. Oakland outscored YSU 16-6 in points off turnovers.
The Golden Grizzlies will continue their three-game homestand on Thursday hosting Wright State in the O'rena starting at 7 p.m.
