OAKLAND UPENDED AT UDM, 73-62

DETROIT - Sinclair Russell scored a career-best and team-high 16 points and Elena Popkey added 15 as Oakland women's basketball (8-9, 2-2 HL) fell at the University of Detroit Mercy (7-11, 2-3 HL), 73-62, as part of the Metro Series Thursday night at Calihan Hall.

Russell set a career-high in points for the second-straight week, tallying 12 in the first half. Popkey's 15 points marks her 50th career double-digit scoring effort and 11th of the season.

The Golden Grizzlies held a 32-27 advantage at half led by a 11-3 run to begin the game as Russell started a perfect 4-for-4 from the floor including hitting a triple. Oakland shot 41 percent in the period and outscored UDM 12-2 in points off turnovers.

Oakland led by as many as 10 early in the second half until UDM scored 12 unanswered points to lead by two with under 12 minutes to play. Both teams battled for the lead but the Titans would shoot 11-for-12 from the free-throw line in the final three minutes to earn the win.

UDM was led by Rosanna Reynolds with a game-high 27 points and 11 rebounds, while Ellisha Crosby added 14 points. The Titans shot 39 percent (26-67) from the field but were 81 percent (17-21) from the foul line.

The Golden Grizzlies return home on Saturday to face Youngstown State in the Athletics Center O'rena beginning at 3 p.m. The game will be aired live on TV20.
